I have a very visual-spatial thinker (right brained learner). My friend who also has one visual-spatial learner that she is homeschooling says I have to read this latest book by Daniel Pink. My TBR pile is high. Some are books I agreed to review and am behind on. Yes I would like to read this. But in the last 15 months I've been more concerned with practical ideas for homeschooling visual-spatial learners, ways I can adapt traditional learning materials to be better suited to an eleven year moreEnvironment Teaching and Learning Resources

There are a myriad of different reasons why individuals choose to homeschool their children there is the financial benefit of avoiding high private school fees; there is the convenience of scheduling education around other family activities etc. One of the most significant benefits of homeschooling is the flexibleness with which you can tailor your child’s schooling. It is a well known fact that every individual has individual needs, and homeschooling allows you to create a learning environmen moreSonlight Curriculum Newcomer Packages

I was born in Venezuela and grew up hearing my parents speak Spanish and though I understand Spanish, I have trouble speaking it. When I visited my daughter, Katie Beth, in Mexico while she was studying in Guatajuato, she teased me about my attempts to speak Spanish. I kept messing up my vowel sounds. In high school, we learned to read, write, and to conjugate verbs. Remember "Esta Susana en casa?" I wish we had done more speaking in Spanish class. I have tried many methods over the years to te moreChoosing a Homeschool Math Curriculum
One question Karen and I get asked quite often is, “What do you think about (insert name here) math curriculum?” It’s an interesting question for two reasons: first, Charlotte Mason didn’t specify exactly how she taught all the levels of math, nor did she endorse a specific curriculum; second, we haven’t used all of the math programs out there. So rather than try to give an opinion on each specific curriculum, Karen and I got together and brainstormed a list of what we think makes a good ma moreThirsty Thursday: Where to Buy Homeschool Curriculum
I would venture to say that most homeschoolers start buying curriculum for the following school year in the spring or summer. More often than not this is a daunting task, and the cost of the various curricula can be overwhelming. Over the last few years I've purchased curriculum from a variety of sources. I try to buy used curriculum and books whenever possible, but sometimes it's just not an option and I have to resort to purchasing new. Here are some of my favorite ways to find curriculum moreUsed Sonlight for Sale?

If you aren't sure what I mean I am referring to the web site time4learning.com Would you recommend it? Do you have to buy additional curriculum? My standard divorce papers say he "has the right to confer with me to the extent possible before making a decision concerning education issues". And that is all the divorce papers say on the issue. But I have always strongly wanted to home school my child and have done all my research as well, curriculum, social activities etc. I work part time but even then my office is attached to my house. My daughter is 12 and has always made all A's and she is very excited about the idea of being home schooled. My ex however is opposed to it. Citing she will not be learning properly and will not be able to get into college etc. My efforts to educate him on homeschooling are being met with a stone wall. If he and I cannot meet in the middle on this, am I within my rights to pursue it still?l moreResolved Question: What are some good homeschooling curriculums for a child age 12?
I am just beginning to home-school and looking for a good program. Thank you. moreResolved Question: Homeschooling Question.... please help?
i asked this question but got no answers so let me shorten it. My daughter wants to go back to school now. At least she waffles back and forth between wanting to be at home and wanting to go back to school. Here are some of the things that we are struggling with and some of the things I am doing. I would love to hear your thoughts... 1. I am not taking it personally. And, I am opening the "Going back to school" doors by emailing the middle school principal. 2. She is struggling with friends... she had close friends at school, yet they live in other neighborhoods and she doesn't like to call them about getting together. I am reaching out on her behalf, but sometimes it seems not fast enough for her. She'd love some friends in the 'hood, but there aren't many girls her age. She has made some homeschool friends but they live 45 minutes away 3. She describes "relaxed home-schooling" as an approach she'd like to take. Some core curriculum stuff with everything else approached more like un-schooling. Sounds good to me. 4. She says she'd like to go to a private school and we don't have any money for that. I do my best to explain the finances, which are tight since I quit working. Any thoughts on keeping the idea of abundance alive while working through the reality of living pay-check to pay-check??? 5. Her brother likes to be naked all day and she hates seeing him nude. She won't let him in her room without clothes. And, she tries to bargain with him - she'll help with his computer questions if he puts on some shorts. Hubby would like to lay down the law with our son. 6. She says that she wanted to homeschool so that she could be with me and not with me and her brother...she will sometimes say that she wants to go back to school in order to get away from her brother. thanks P.S she's 12 and he's 8 moreResolved Question: Canadian Homeschooler with a U.S. Curriculum: Questions?
Hi! I've been looking at different homeschooling programs, and I've been thinking about some of those U.S. Programs. (Keystone, Christa McAuliffe Academy, etc) I want to take Honors and AP courses, and these are some schools that offer them. If I do enroll into Keystone or any other one, will I still be able to get into a Canadian University/college? (I've also been looking into applying to colleges in the U.S too...) or would it be safer to take Canadian based curriculum? Are there any Canadian homeschoolers out there enrolled in a U.S program? Can you tell me how you do it? Your plan? Thank-you! moreResolved Question: Homeschooling moms, 2 part question...?
Do you purchase new or used curriculum? Where do you purchase from? At the end of the year, do you sell what you used for the current year? We buy a lot from Sonlight and have used Notgrass history. It never really occurred to us to buy used because we were new to homeschooling this year but I've been looking to sell our stuff and feel silly. We could have saved HUNDREDS by buying used! I am trying to sell some of our best condition things on VegSource but have had no luck. :( moreResolved Question: I have a question about homeschooling-in Ontario and the US?
A friend of mine and I were discussing home-schooling-both of our kids go to public school. And we were trying to find out what are the requirements to homeschool your child? In Ontario we found that you have to fill out a bunch of forms with an outline of the curriculum, and which books you're using etc.. and then the Board of education reviews it-to see whether that'sSatisfactory Instruction -but then nowhere says what is considered by the board Satisfactory Instruction?? huh? Im soo confused.. everything seems very grey.. Anyone from Canada-particularly Ontario and from US moms who homeschool... how do you go about it? And what happens when your child is older and wants to enter university? Is there some kind of test they take for it?? -our kids are fairly young still but we were wondering... Any info would be greatly appreciated!! moreResolved Question: Homeschooling parents please help me out?
This will be the first year I am homeschooling my child. I will be homeschooling all three but my oldest is 7 and going into second grade. The others are too young still. Since I am new at this I am really having a hard time finding curriculum. I am just wondering if you can give me the names and websites that you buy your curriculum from or if there is any you can recommend to me? I am looking for something that has all grade levels (k-12) it can or can not be Christan based (either or) and I am hoping for something that contains books, workbooks and teacher books for the whole year. Can someone please help me out? All answers are truly appreciated. moreResolved Question: How do I legally and intelligently homeschool my daughter?
My daughter is 7, and does well in school. However, because of life circumstances, I would like to homeschool her for at least a semester, possibly a year. I don't think this is going to be a long term thing, so whatever I do must be recognized by a school district when it's time to enroll her again. Obviously, I want to give her a quality education. I am not Christian and would not like to use a Christian program, just a legitimate secular curriculum. I am, however, open to a curriculum that has a rather general "spiritual" theme of sorts, although I've never heard of such a thing. I don't have a fortune to spend on this, so I need something realistically priced. I am familiar with homeschooling, as I was actually homeschooled nearly all my life, but "rules" were really different then. What are my best options? moreResolved Question: What is the best way to homeschool?
I homeschooled my daughter this past year and in the fall I will be homeschooling her for 7th grade. I have already been looking into curriculum for the fall. So many programs are bible based, and although we are a Christian family, but I just want a program with regular subjects without a biblical influences. Is it necessary to go through these accredited online schools or is that a scam? I am just wondering about keeping records for if and when I put my daughter back in public school. What kind of records would be needed if I put my daughter back in public school? moreVoting Question: Who offers a "Summer Sampler" for Homeschooling for kids/parents to see what it's like?
I am looking to homeschool my middle school boys this year...but I am looking for a curriculum provider that may offer a summer program so we can get a taste and see what it's like before investing in a full year program. I'm currently considering registering for homeschooling in semester 2 for year 10, however, i have a few questions, please answer these if you are sure about what your talking about. 1. Where do you get your work and what curriculum do you follow, who corrects it, do you have to do exams? 2. Do you get your year 10 pass or something to prove you finished year 10 at the end of the semester? 3. After you become registered, then what happens? AND, i have been looking into distance education, the distance education centre for victoria (DECV) has 9 eligibility categories for years 7-12, i want to finish year 10 at least, and it says in the 9th eligibility category, if you are a registered homeschooler: " CATEGORY 9: HOME SCHOOLING The Education and Training Reform Act 2006 came into effect on Sunday, 1 July 2007. The Act provides for the registration, by the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA), of students of compulsory school age undertaking home schooling. At the time of developing the Act, the Victorian Government made a number of commitments concerning support for registered home schoolers, including access to curriculum materials provided by the DECV. In accordance with this commitment, certain DECV materials are now available, in print form and on a cost recovery basis, to registered home schoolers of compulsory school age. Access to these materials is subject to compliance with copyright requirements and verification of the child's registration with the VRQA. Information regarding the home schooling registration process for compulsory school age students can be found on the VRQA website at: http://www.vrqa.vic.gov.au/default.htm Cost of Materials: $150 per year level (Up to 6 subjects) or $75 for one semester. Contact the DECV Enrolment Manager for a “Purchase of Materials” application form. " Does this mean i become an enrolled student in the DECV or do i only get materials? and if only get materials, does anyone check them to see if i have done them correctly, and pass me or not, or have something to show i finished year 10? Thanks :) moreResolved Question: Home schooling parents please answer?
I have a 2 month old daughter and I am planning to have more children in the future. I am thinking about possibly home schooling them and I have a few questions I would like you to answer if you don't mind:) 1. How do you socialize your children? In other words, do you take them places where they can make friends? If so, where? 2. Where does your curriculum come from? Do you make up your own or is there a website you use as a guide? 3. If there is a website, may I have the name? 4. What are some good, educational field trips you have taken your children on? 5. Do you make your children wake up early to start school or do you let them sleep in? Is there a specific time they need to wake up by or do you just let them sleep and start school whenever they wake up? Thanks in advance, I look forward to the answers. Oh and if you are here just to bash homeschooling please don't bother wasting your time answering this question because I will likely not read it. I'm curious about homeschooling, I don't care to hear your opinion on it though. I know it is a big responsibility which is why I am starting to research it now...my daughter is only 2 months old! I have plenty of time... I live in California BTW... moreResolved Question: Should I send my kids to Public School Charter or homeschool Charter?
I have been homeschooling through a Charter School for the past three years. My daughter is in 2nd grade but she is above grade level in all subjects. Now would I want to send her to school if she is, the whole thing about not getting enough socialization. She does get together with other kids on a weekly basis but I have never done the public school thing so I am nervous. Staying home she does the curriculum that I love, piano and horseback riding. Public School she will learn spanish and sign language. I don't know, please help. Both have great pluses and I do like to home school, I love my kids and I want what is best. My daughter wants to be home schooled, but I guess I just want her to have a best friend like I did in school, but right now her sister who is 3 years younger is her best friend and they get along great. None of that your a baby and I am older then you so I can't play with you, which I know school does changes that since my friends daughter says that to her little sister who is the same years apart and my sister did it to me. Well your advice is very much appricated. moreResolved Question: What ideas to practice homeschooling over the summer?
I would LOVE to home-school my children. I would like to kinda practice doing so over the summer. To keep them from loosing all of their information and to prove to myself and hubby that I can do it. What kind of curriculum should I use? Have any of you ever home-schooled over the summer? Perhaps if I did something like a fun learning activity or write about what we did today? Not something like a few hours a day but maybe an assignment and thats it?? moreResolved Question: What is the best homeschooling curriculum?
I homeschooled my daughter this year and we both really loved it. It was a very positive experience. I will be homeschooling my daughter again in the fall. I just started working so I won't have as much time to devote preparing her lessons. What is the best program for working independently. I am thinking that a workbook series would probably be the best program for both of us. moreResolved Question: My little sister has never been to school. Should I hire a private teacher?
My little sister has just turned 15 and I'm very concerned for her education. She's never been to school. My parents insisted on "homeschooling" her the very first year she was supposed to go but has never really followed through with a curriculum. She's incredibly bright, can read amazingly well, knows her grammar, and is advanced in a lot of things that I'm sure most 15 year olds aren't. I'm mainly worried about skills such as math and science. -- Any advice on what to do in this situation? I want to look into talking my parents into hiring a private teacher for her. Does anyone know how they work exactly? I almost feel like we're the only ones stuck in this situation. I really appreciate any advice or suggestions. moreResolved Question: Homeschool History: USA or World? Which do you prefer?
So far I've been homeschooling using Abeka history curriculum and it appears that in grades K-6th mostly USA history is taught. Not much about the world. Many of my homeschool friends use Story Of The World curriculum which teaches about ancient times, middle ages, other countries and places around the globe, but seemingly nothing about the USA. If I use one - I feel like my children will not learn about the other - and vise versa. I want my children to learn about both but at the right time. Any advice? moreResolved Question: How do you follow the TX home school laws with "unschooling" if the law says you need a written curriculum?
I am starting to home-school my six year old this year and want to make sure I am following the laws in Texas. I know "unschooling" is a form of homeschooling and there is not a law against it, but I need to know how to go about "unschooling" when according to TX laws, a written curriculum must be followed. How does one accomplish this? moreResolved Question: Switching homeschooling Programs?
This year, my ninth grade year, I began Abeka DVD Academy. The school year coming to an end, this experience has been a disaster. We didn't expect there to be so much work. My mom works a 9-5 job, and is completely exhausted when she comes home, and my father works as well. We didn't expect for there to be tests in each class practically every day. We're already late on a progress report, and we have only 4 days to turn it in at the latest date. We've only begun tests for English for that Progress Report. I myself know there is no way we are going to be able to finish. I feel terrible because it's a very expensive program. My idea is to switch right now to, Switched On Schoolhouse and re-do my ninth grade year. It's inexpensive and reviews have been encouraging. I'm not able to work in a public environment because I get distracted with other people around me. I can't go back to public, but I'm afraid that's what my mom will do. Is Switched on Schoolhouse a better curriculum? The amount of tests and parent involvement needed for Abeka is just too much. Help! moreResolved Question: Kindergarten Homeschool Schedule question....Please help. Thanks!?
I have a 5 year old that I'm planning on homeschooling. I have several questions and would like advice and opinions of other homeschool mothers. First of all, what kind of schedule do you follow? In our state (Louisiana) we have to homeschool for 180 days a yr. Do you do homeschooling every day of the week? How long should I teach my child a day? Some people say 30 mins per subject, others say that at this age, there is really no curriculum required and that only do about 30 mins all day long. What do you do? Also, since there is no "real" curriculum required, what do you teach? I know about Grade Level Expectations, do you follow that or not? Also, being new at homeschooling, I was wondering what kind of schedule you used as far as keeping your housework done. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!! I also have a 5 mth old too. So I will need time with her as well. So if you have any advice on how to schedule around a baby, that would be appreciated too. moreResolved Question: Best Homeschooling Curricula?

Hello, I have decided I am going to homeschool my 5 year old son and I am wondering if anyone can recommend a good curriculum and how many hours per day, on average, does it take to homeschool a child. My son is a fairly quick learner and is already doing basic reading, addition, subtraction, etc. He loves to learn, has a great vocabulary, etc Anyway, my biggest question is about the timing. We talk a lot during the day, and we will walk around the house and do math, we read books, play outside and talk about plants and science, etc but I don't know how much "sit down" learning there should be at this age or if I should wait until he is a bit older to begin "formal" education. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! I feel a bit lost but I am really looking forward to learning as I go along! :) Thank you.... moreVoting Question: Cramming a 7th grade curriculum into 3 1/2 months?
My daughter has a chronic illness that has been flaring up for several months, so I've eased up (way too much) on the homeschooling this year. I figured we could get caught back up when she's feeling better(she's starting to, and she's very bright). Well, she just told me that she wants to return to public school next year. Is there any way to cram an entire secular curriculum into 3 1/2 months? We were using time4learning.com before - is there another curriculum that would be better suited for intensive study? moreResolved Question: Is This A Good Choice Of School??? Mother Of Mercy High School?
Okay, Ohio's current Governor, Ted Strickland ( <-- Loathe with a passion) is threatening to cut funding for e-schools (Online homeschooling programs) by 74%, causing most of the schools to close, which may include my school, Ohio Virtual Academy, so now, just to have a plan to fall back on if this does happen, I am researching good private high schools. I know that I am too late in the game to get in a school for the 09-10 school year, so I am getting ready to test, apply, and register for a good private high school for the 10-11 school year. So far, the one school that has caught the majority of my attention is Mother of Mercy High School (All-girls private Roman Catholic School), their curriculum and values look excellent, and they are a Blue Ribbon school, impressive. I would just like some feed back on whether this is a truly good school or not. The main aspects I like most about this school are their generosity with scholarships (Which when it comes to tuition, is just about my only method of payment besides grants), they also appear to have a large choice of AP and Honors courses. I am also interested in joining a sports team to be a bit more health conscience and be more involved in the school. So basically I would like responses from people who have or are attending Mother Of Mercy High School in Cincinnati Ohio and give me their opinion as well as the pros and cons of the schools from all aspects, academically, atheletically and in any way otherwise. Thank you. moreResolved Question: Homeschooling Legal Issues- Joint Custody: I want to home school & Dad does not want me to... what to do?
I have a 5 (almost 6) year old who is set to start school this summer. His father received joint custody about 6 months ago. I want to homeschool my child, but he wants him to be sent to a public school (one that is fairly crappy). I think that our child would thrive better in a homeschooled enviroment (at least for the first year or two). He has been going through major emotional changes with the recent joint custody/split households, and I do not feel public school would be as accomodating as I can be. His emotional problems have been discussed through lawyers and judges-- but no one seems to care. The problems have been going on for a while, and I recently had to leave my FT job for a PT job because of it... I need some advice, encouragement, ideas, etc. Most likely his dad will be taking me to court this summer over the schooling issue. I want to have a solid program/curriculum planned to teach him. If you do not agree to homeschooling, please do not even comment back telling me to send him to a public school-- I've throughly reasearched all schooling options, interviewed public-- private-- homeschools... and still feel this is the absolute best environment for him. He is a very emotional child, and I LOVE that about him. Additionally, he is one of the most loving, curteous, polite boys I've ever been around. He is exceptionally smart and I know that he would be bored in a public school setting, with very little challenges. Lastly, in a FINAL attempt to try and get him to see why homeschooled kindergarten would be best for him, we are going to visit the public schools together. I have a list of questions to ask the schools... but, any other ideas?! Thanks!!! moreResolved Question: Questions on homeschooling a child while traveling or living abroad.?
I have done a lot of searching and reading of different websites on the internet and through Y Answers, although I still have questions about homeschooling a child while traveling or living abroad. Since my son and I are US Citizens, would I teach him the American Curriculum or would I teach him the Curriculum from the country we will be living in? How do I get into contact with the the person, group, or organization who can give me more information on the homeschooling program? Also who or how do I contact the person, group, or organization that can get me set up and started in being able to home school my son? For those who will ask, we are going to be moving to the Philippines as my husband lives there. I know for a fact that until he learns the native language he will have a hard time trying to fit into a public school, and there is no way I can afford private International Schooling for him. That is why I want to know how to go about homeschooling him while there, at least for the first couple of years. Hi, I am interested in getting an idea of Florida's standards or taught curriculum for 6th and 7th grade. Some examples of things I don't want to see in your answer are: If you put Pre-algebra, please go into more detail on what things in Pre-algebra you learn. If you put American History, under american history put wars or certain years (1892 or 1892-1936). I would like a NEAT working website or an organized, typed list that includes: Science Social Studies Language Arts Math and anything else There is a reason I didn't put this question under homeschooling, so please don't give me names of homeschooling programs. Thank You, "Laurel" moreResolved Question: Best Foreign Language Curriculum for 6-8 year olds?

I would like to home-school my daughter starting in the upcoming school year, she will be in grade 4. I am wondering what information people can offer when trying to decide if a blended program or a traditional home school program is best for us. My biggest concern is if I go traditional how will I find proper resources for grade 4 curriculum? I want her to stay up with other schooled children for in the future if she would like to return to the public system. I would like to know if there are resources that would assist us in making sure she is learning the proper things for her grade. Tools that may have handouts and stuff for each subject? Also it has been a long time since I did grade 4 work and I am worried about how I will properly help her to learn the material without something being layed out for us. Any advice or comments would be helpful. Thanks moreResolved Question: History of education?

We are moving from WA to TX (military) and I am seriously considering homeschooling at least my middle child (going to be a 2nd grader) next year. Possibly the other two as well, but my middle child is my #1 concern. He is a very unique boy. We've had him tested for Aspergers Syndrome and they were unable to give us a definitive answer. We had him tested (at his teacher's urging) for Highly Capable, and learned that, while he's a brilliant boy, standardized tests are not his forte- he did horrible. He has trouble sitting still in class, he can be a distraction for other students, not in a bad way, he just doesn't realize he's making noise or moving. We have been so incredibly blessed the last two years that his kindergarten and first grade teacher have had the patience to understand that he is just a different kind of thinker, and they both worked hard to encourage him and nurture his unique learning needs. Now that we're moving and we don't have the long family history at the new school, I worry that his new teacher may not understand or care. He already is picked on for being "weird", plus he's very small for his age which doesn't help things. He hates school and beats himself up because he thinks he's stupid. It hurts me so much as a mother to see this little tiny boy who is such an amazing and wonderfully talented and brilliant person, withdraw more and more into himself. His self esteem is just shrinking every day. I'm afraid one bad teacher or one more bad student experience is going to completely ruin him. Which is WHY I am considering homeschool for him, possibly my younger daughter as well, my older daughter loves public school and I would probably let that be her choice, as long as her grades didn't suffer due to social drama. I really have no idea where to get started. Is the first step to purchase a bunch of curriculum? Find a local homeschool group and see what they use? Just go to Staples and buy a bunch of those little workbooks? The 3 kids will be in grades 1, 2, and 4. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm still not 100% I want to do it, but I'm currently about 80%, and will decide for sure once we've moved and found a place to live and learn a bit more about the neighborhood school they're supposed to attend. We're moving to El Paso, in case anyone is in the area reading this and has area-specific information they can share... OK, for starters, I didn't say he had "learning challenges", I said he thinks differently. That doesn't make him stupid. Bill Gates was outside the box too. He doesn't need Special Ed. My 7 year old is probably already smarter than at least two of the people who have answered this so far. I asked for anyone with KNOWLEDGE about the subject to answer. Obviously some of you are quite ignorant and have nothing better to do but be rude. moreResolved Question: Educational Curriculum?
Do all schools of Britain follow the same curriculum? For example: If you get your kid into a religious school, is it obligated to follow the national curriculum and teach Darwinism Evolutionism and sexual orientation like pills and condoms beyond the biblical Creationism and the sexual abstinence? Are pupils totally protected against psychologically and physically abuse in the schools? Is homeschooling allowed in the UK? "are pupils total protected against psychological and physical abuse in schools" - sorry, i did a gramar mistake. moreResolved Question: When teachers and administrators say homeschooling is illegal...?
Or when they say only certified teachers are allowed to home school, or that you have to work through an accredited school, or that colleges do not accept home schooled students, or that you have to use the public school's curriculum, or that you can only home school online, or that you can only do it if your child is sick... are they just lying shamelessly to keep students in the system? Or do they just know very little if anything about the home school regulations in their state? If they just don't know the facts, why do they even attempt to answer when a parent or someone else asks about home schooling? For the record, I homeschooled all through high school and was recently accepted to Florida State University's honors program. I'm not looking for homeschool information. I'm just genuinely curious why so many teachers and administrators tend to say these things both on Y!A and in person when other people ask. moreResolved Question: What do you think of this? Homeschooling?
Mom, Please can you just think of this? Im not happy at HKA! I feel like half the time im just waiting around for other people to do THEIR work before we can move on. Mom, I feel my self going closer, and closer to a mental breakdown every day i go. Its crap, mom. You know it. You know that I cant be happy there so will you PLEASE just think about this? Let me just list the pros and cons of homeschooling: Pros: I can learn at my own pace I can focus on school work No stalkers! I can spend my time better, not waiting for other kids to get ready, waiting for clarification for other kids, ect ect. You can graduate faster! (I researched) Some collages want homeschooled kids because they are more mature than alot of others. I wont be up all night worrying about homework, which I usually am. Cons: I wont get to hang with my friends at lunch. Read this please!! Advantages Yes, there are disadvantages to homeschooling. However, there are many advantages, too. * A schedule that works - Are your children early birds? Do you find your peak time of day starting at noon? It can all work in homeschooling. Homeschooling works with your family. Personally, my children love knowing that they are eating breakfast while most of their friends are already in class. * Wide range of learning - You are not stuck to a pre-set curriculum in most cases. There are so many cool things to study - Latin, Spanish, how to garden, quilting, sewing, art, music, microscopes...well, the list is endless. Every year you will find new things to learn, see, and do. * Flexibility - We can take a family vacation in November, a month off in December, a week off when we all have the flu. Homeschooling is flexible. We had no plans to study parade floats, but after watching a parade one day, one of my children starting planning their own float design. While there is no way I am ordering 20,000 roses to decoate a full-size float, we can build a mini-model. We learn art, building design, physics (how to make it move), and math (figuring out measurements to make it all fit. Flexibility! * Knowing your kids - I list this last because I consider it the biggest prize of homeschooling. While there are times every day I would gladly hide in my room, overall I so enjoy my time with my kids. In teaching them, I really get to know them in ways I did not before. I not only love my kids, I being around them. These are just a few, but maybe it will help get you started. In the end, what is required is taking the plunge. It is a leap of faith both frightening and exhilarating. The Pros Educational Freedom. Most homeschooled students have the choice to study and learn what they want, when they want, for as long as they want. This is not to say that all the basics (and more!) aren't covered. But those basics may be covered at age six for one child, and at age ten for another, depending on ability, maturity, and interest levels. (Unfortunately, a few states do have unnecessarily restrictive legal requirements; in those states, educational freedom may be limited.) Physical Freedom. After the initial shock of leaving the school system has passed, parents who homeschool say they experience a real sense of freedom. With their lives no longer revolving around school hours, homework, and the school calendar, these families plan off-season vacations, visit parks and museums during the week, and live their lives according to what works for them. Emotional Freedom. Sadly, peer pressure, competition, boredom, and bullies — are all part of a typical school day. This can be a particular problem for girls. According to studies, self-esteem plummets in middle-school girls. However, similar studies of homeschooled girls have shown that self-esteem remains intact and that these girls continue to thrive. (Read A Sense of Self: Listening to Homeschooled Adolescent Girls by Susannah Sheffer.) Homeschooled kids can dress and act and think the way they want, without fear of ridicule or a need to "fit in." They live in the real world, where lives aren't dictated by adolescent trends and dangerous experimentation. Religious Freedom. Many families feel their religious and spiritual beliefs are an important part of who they are. Homeschooling provides the opp Please mom. Can you think about ME? We are a homeschooling family. My oldest attended our local community college at the beginning of this year (9th grade) taking advanced algebra & trig. He finished with a B+ which we were happy with. My thoughts were 9th grade is to early to be finished with math so I have him working at home with Calculus 1 as an intro, with the thought of taking calculus 1 in the fall at the college. Calculus is the only available classes following A&T. His interest are graphic designing which doesn't seem to require calculus. We are having difficulties with the calculus and teaching it which is making it frustrating for him. My question is, what are the opinions from others that may have dealt with this situation. Do we put the math away for the rest of the year and then pick up in Sept with calculus 1? Do we find an easier way to teach the calculus at home then follow up with calculus 1 in the fall at the college? Do we say you've done a really good job with math and finished it a few years early? Math has always been very easy for him I just didn't think I'd have to be figuring out ways to stretch it out. Thank you for any input you may have. moreResolved Question: illinois homeschooling issue... plz help?
