Voting Question: Stove element meant for 110 volt: can it be safely hooked up to 220 volt single phase circuit?

I have a Satellite J-200 burnout oven which I use for metal casting. The manufacturer claims the oven gets up to 1650 Fahrenheit after an hour, but mine doesn't get but to 1100 after 4 hours. I have isolated circuits so it is the only drain on the circuit, but to no avail! I want to hook the oven to single phase 220 volt to double its power. The question, since my element obviously isn't reaching its maximum potential and can handle more juice, will the 220 volt overload it, or is it because 220 volt is easier on wires, that it will work seamlessly in the new arrangement? The only thing the power goes through before reaching the elements is a control knob which look a lot like a home oven knob (1,2,3...Max, infinitely adjustable). It seems simple enough! What do you think? Also, I know there is a difference between 220 volt single and double phases, but I don't think I want double do I? This is a standard North American (110v std) home circuit breaker. I think I want single phase for this tweak, am I right in not wanting dual phase? The oven currently operates on single phase. Many thanks! Thanks all for your great answers. My confusion sprang from a water line defrosting element we had while living in Northern Ontario. The water drew from the lake, and would often freeze along the 80' line when the temperature hit -20. I was instructed to hook the line via its only two wires (making it single phase I assume) in a 220v configuration. This quickly melted the ice! And the element (line) did not burn out over two cold Winters. I assumed this spoke fortuitously for my situation! I was wrong, or at least am not willing to take the risk in an oven I cannot afford to replace. So thanks! I will try some other jigs to get the heat up. Charcoal briquettes in the oven have helped in the past. And yes more insulation would sure do the trick as well! The 2" thick fire brick just doesn't seem to cut it. I will follow your advices! p.s. - the oven stays fully lit continuously when on Maximum, therefore the temperature sensor is eliminated from possible suspects!  more

Resolved Question: Would someone be willing to read my short narrative and give me feedback?

I am inspired by David Sedaris. I would like to write books similar to him. My style, a little more PG rated. I want it to be sweet, nastalgic, querky, a little humerous. I'd like to put together a book someday full of true stories like this one. The topic of this story is simple and little boring, I have better ideas, but I thought, I can make make this one interesting, then maybe I would have a chance...... I would like honest opinions, but please don't be too mean. Thanks Here it is...... The Hairbrush When I was a kid I completely idolized my big sister. She was 4 ½ years older than me and everything I wanted to be. She was a good sister, at 3 years of age, I became her playmate, and she was kind to me, protected and nurtured me and even “dumbed” herself down in order to adequately play with me. As we got older she became a little more domineering, just starting to realize she might have some control over me. I’d usually do about anything she asked without talking back or telling mom. We got along well; we rode our bikes, went to the pool, played video games and watched TV together. We shared the upstairs story of our house. After our mom would tuck us in at night, we’d both yell “leave the hall light on!” and we would stay up until the wee hours of the morning, playing ridiculous games in our room, tickling each other’s backs, playing house, telling stories. Sometimes she would ask for a backrub promising my one in return, when it was finally my turn; she’d pretend she was asleep. I’d wake her up and she’d tell me that she didn’t remember getting a backrub and I should give her another one. “Heavy sleeper,” I thought, and foolishly, I would. Eventually she’d fall asleep for real, leaving me feeling not only disappointed but wounded by my aching little hands . She was beginning to find out; I’d do about anything for her. When we would take our baths together, one of our favorite activities was to play “splish, splash” while the bathtub was draining. It was a simple concept; we would plant our feet against the end of the tub, just under the water spout. Then we’d bend our knees and push off, sending our slippery bodies up the back of the tub like a miniature “slip n’ slide.” We’d yell “Splish” on the dismount and “Splash” on the way back, wriggling around like an earthworm in the process. The problem was; it really only worked when there was one person in the bathtub at a time. So while the water started draining, I involuntarily had to get out of the tub, dripping wet, stand there and wait for her turn to be over. I couldn’t dry myself off with a towel because I’d loose the ability to be slippery, so I’d wait, until the bath was practically dry and she had finished her turn. My turn had arrived, and although, I could usually get a few good slides in before I would receive a major “tub burn” it wouldn’t match the crazy fun my sister had just experienced. To make it up to me, my sister would then steal my towel and run out of the bathroom. If I chased after her, dripping wet and freezing cold, she would run into our room and fan my naked body with the door, opening it and closing it obnoxiously. Around the time she entered her teens, she had mastered the art of manipulation. Soon I was competing in races against the clock to make her a sandwich; I would hear her counting loudly from the upstairs bedroom that we still shared. If I made the sandwich before she stopped counting to 100, she would reward me with her presence, the ultimate prize in my book. We’d be hanging out and she’d get a hankering for a root beer float and she’d say. “Go downstairs and make me a root beer float, I’ll time you……GO! Before I could object, she was counting down the seconds sending me into a root beer float making frenzy, taking the stairs two at a time, my heart pounding, knowing what was at stake. Often, she’d threaten me saying she’d never go on another bike ride with me again or something equally as punishing. When I got older, I called her bluff. She had wanted me to go swimming with her while we were on vacation. Although swimming was one of my favorite activities, this lake was infested with leaches and it was getting dark. I out of complete fear refused; I was absolutely TERRIFIED of leaches. She never rode bikes with me again. Even in her early teen years, for the most part, I think she still enjoyed my company, although, at the time, she’d probably never admit it. The hardest and most confusing point for me came when she started to have friends over and went out more and no longer wanted me around. Of course, this is a natural thing to happen, but it hurt just the same. Soon I was moving my stuff from the upstairs story which we shared, to a room on the main floor that used to be a sleeping room for my Mom’s daycare kids. It was hard to accept at first, but after a while, I got used to busying myself with toys and friends too. She was 16 years old. She had a j Crap!!! It didn't get my whole story, the whole concept, but thank you so much for your NICE feedback! I will try to send the rest via email! Oops, I guess you guys don't allow access to email, if you'd like to read the rest, please post your email and I'll send it, there is quite a bit more to the story The hairbrush comes into the story later, if you are interested, my email is jessnelson@yahoo.com  more

Resolved Question: What's your review of the Chickenfoot album?

In case you don't know Chickenfoot is a supergroup consisting of Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony, and Chad Smith. Their debut album was released two weeks ago so I was wondering what you think of it since you've all had plenty of time to listen to it. I think it's the best rock album this decade by far! Sammy Hagar still sounds awesome, Satriani sounds really good (doesn't get too wild) in this group, Michael Anthony's bass and harmonizing is fantastic. But my biggest surprise was seeing how damn good a drummer Chad Smith is, I never noticed he was so good while he was in the RHCP! If you don't have this album yet and you love hard rock music then buy it, you shouldn't be disappointed! My favorite song from the album is "Down the Drain" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_EMFYrZVrw BQ - Favorite song on the album? BQ2 - Chickenfoot album or a particular VH album? If VH, which one? Resolved Question: Help, I put 2cycle engine oil in the crank case of my mower instead of SAE 30?

Yup, I did the responsible thing before the mowing season...filled the gas tank with fresh regular unleaded gas then proceeded to top off the oil (about 6 oz) in the crank case with the oil sitting on the shelf (unfortunately it was the 2 cycle engine oil, instead of SAE 30). I mowed for about 2 hours without a problem, then the following week, I noticed it was running rough, then eventually it would stall out. I changed the spark plug & air filter, but it still ran rough and stalled after about 5 mins. That is when I discovered my error, so I drained the old oil out (which was thick & black) and replaced it with fresh SAE 30 oil. It still runs for 5 mins, then stalls, but it will restarted after a couple hours. Do I replace the spark plug again, then try running the new oil through? When it stalls, can I clean off the the spark plug and persist in starting it again? My thought is if I can persist in getting the new oil circulating though the engine, my problem will resolve. It is not dead yet, but where do I go from here? Thanks, J Thank you for all suggestions, The engine is a Tecumseh Model LV195EA 362050C (about 5 years old) I will persist and get a few extra spark plugs. I am hoping that it isn't more than that since I am not handy in replacing parts. Let me pass something else past all of you........ My brother mentioned he swears by something called "seafoam". He was able to resurrect a 15 year old idle generator by using it in the crankcase and he even added it to the gas. He said it was like a detergent for your engine. Thanks Again, J  more

Resolved Question: Need help with leak in P trap under bathroom sink?

I undid the P trap under my bathroom sink to clear a clog and now when I put the whole thing back together it leaks out of the top of the slip joint that connects the down pipe from the sink drain to the j-pipe. The down pipe is 1 - 1/4" and the j-pipe is 1-1/2" and I am using the correct reducer gasket. It was not leaking (and never had) before I took it apart. I have tried using a new gasket and teflon tape on the threads of the slip joint to no avail. Please give me some idea as to what the problem might be. Here is a link to a couple of pictures to show the general set-up and the specific problem: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sesquilia/?saved=1 Thanks to anyone that can help. Thanks everyone for your willingness to help. The gasket is facing the correct way. I had it the correct way to begin with, but had the thought that maybe it was turned the wrong way so tried to switch it (but obviously that didn't work). I also did have the thought that it was not tightened up enough, but just tightening more did not work and I can tighten relaly well by hand. I actually ended up buying a whole new assembly as the person at Lowes could not find me just a gasket, so I really don't think it's cracked and same problem w/ old or new parts. I orignally put it together w/out the teflon tape, but was just trying anything to fix the problem. I have taken apart and put together the same type of trap under my kitchen sink many times w/ no problem, that's why I am so stymied. So far I like David L's suggestion best. Would I use just clear silicone caulking? Also, would I use it between the gasket and the j-pipe, the gasket and the slip nut, or both?  more

Resolved Question: Did Prince's change of religion hurt his music career?

I remember the first time I heard he wasn't going to perform Little Nicky, Little Red Corvette and countless other sexual laden songs any longer, and remembering asking myself, "WTF? What's he going to then?!" Every since he became a jehovah's witness his music has been garbage! No one wants to hear his new music. Case in point, when he was asked to perform in the Super Bowl a couple of years ago, he wanted to play something new. Super Bowl officials said, "No!" That he was to play music from his Purple Rain-ish days. Even tight up, white-collar, old men knew that his old stuff is relevant. His new material? Not even close! So should he hang it up? Or stop being a witness? BTW- Just imagine if he was a j.w's while filming Purple Rain. Boy, that would've sucked major balls. (For the jehovah witnesses out there, "that would've been a lot of in-taking of air of the testicular area/region!") http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/rocksbackpages/9319/purple-drain-is-it-time-to-give-up-on-the-prince-we-all-want/  more

Resolved Question: Help~~ check my writting, especially for grammar *-* (Body2)?

A widely use of differentiated strategy in various parts of the academic field has been frequently searched and verified the efficacy of using differentiated strategy in gifted education (Parsons, 2004; J. Denise Drain’s, 2008). Parsons (2004) applies differentiated strategy in teaching reading for gifted students, and indeed improves their reading competent. Moreover, a successful performance of differentiated strategy has been conducted from J. Denise Drain’s (2008) research; the result shows a significantly high academic growth by using differentiated strategy among elementary gifted children. Differentiated strategy indeed satisfies the needs of gifted students. Differentiation enriches the learning environments of gifted students. The differentiated strategy lies in making the same content more accessible through a variety of resources and scaffolds. The classroom with a rich source of books, pictures, materials and journal creates an ideal classroom climate where students learn from small group and share opinions with each other. The strategy of differentiated content helps a development of cognition, and engages all students into the learning activities effortlessly. In the other words, differentiation will facilitate active rather than passive learning (Joyce VanTassel-Baska.al.et, 2008). Also, teacher as scaffolding access gifted students’ level of ability and further to forward students moving to the next level of knowledge (LiaMonique Scott, 2008). "Differentiated strategy" is a "buzzword" in the field of special education.  more

Resolved Question: 1997 Pontiac Sunfire Convertible Question (pics)?

Hey! I have a 1997 Sunfire SE vert. My question is about a little rubber piece of weatherstripping that runs under where the convertible top and rear quarter window meet. I just finished putting a new top on this car, and am about to register and drive it. I have kept the car garaged, and I am not sure where rain is supposed to go when it collects inside this rubber piece shown in the pictures at the link below. I assume water is supposed to collect inside the rubber strip and go toward front of car, draining between the body panels. I can't see anywhere else it is supposed to go, but I am not sure since this is my first convertible J and my first attempt at putting on a convertible top. I wanted to check here first instead of washing the car and possibly figuring things out the hard way. I read the Convertible Top Water Leak Repair guide published for these cars, but didn't find any good points of reference for this situation. Picture number 8 shows this piece the best (it has a circular cutout near the middle of it). Vert owners, please chime in! http://s689.photobucket.com/albums/vv251/pleasehelplol/ anybody else?  more

I checked the J Trap - it was empty. I tried the plunger - 100 times! I tried the baking soda, followed by boiling water. I tried the baking soda and vinegar follwed by boiling water. I tried Drano. I tried the drain auger, got 20+ feet deep into sewer line. All of the above - and no change - still clogged! I have a garbage disposal, took it out, checked it, no known problems. What do you suggest I try next or is it time to call a plumber? Thanks in advance!  more

Resolved Question: Help with The Invasion of the Body Snatchers?

Is the real fear at the center of the movie the fear and paranoia that there are larger forces in our society trying to take over our minds and stunt our humanity? What does Miles mean when he tells Becky: "In my practice, I've seen how people have allowed their humanity to drain away. Only it happened slowly instead of all at once. They didn't seem to mind...All of us-a little bit-we harden our hearts, grow callous. Only when we have to fight to stay human do we realize how precious it is to us, how dear." What is the relationship between Miles' observation about the pod people; "It's a malignant disease spreading through the whole country", and the directer of the FBI J. Edgar Hoover's statement that "Communism is a disease, and just like in an epidemic, a quarantine may be necessary"? What is the significance of Miles trying to call the FBI when he first discovers the larger plot of the pod people? Does the contacting of the FBI at the ed of the movie represent a possible triumph over the pod people? Why does Miles, the main character win out against the pods? What is the larger significance of Miles' losing Becky to the pod people? How does Miles discover that Becky isn't anymore but in fact a pod person? Why don't people on the highway believe Miles when he tells them: "Look, you fools. You're in danger. Can't you see? They' after you. They're after all of us. Our wives, our children, everyone. They're here already. You're next!"  more

Resolved Question: Please read this first chapter? (its long)?

im working on a book, and this is the first chapter. Im 14 years old, and the book would be for adolescent. Please let me know what you think! Enjoy! Chapter 1- Eye Reading Reality bleeds through, eating me inside out, it drains, it drags, as I fall down under I realize, I’m sick. Not in the head, but of the world, politics, friends, and drama. Jekyll was here. I’m sick of the double guessing, sick of the ‘what if’ or a chance of worry lines. I no longer can dance to my own tune. I want to get away. Go somewhere where everyone is oblivious to me, my thoughts, my doings, and my nature. Where my thoughts and I can have a good argument over the pigment in flowers, or evolution. A place where my heart and I can run wild and free, a place called… “Baa-caaw!” life flittered back into my eyes, I set my pencil down and watched it roll to the end of the table, and fall so graciously to the floor. Hyde had returned, keeping Jekyll a secret. Looking up I said “Baa-caaw,” right back. It was Kahlool. She was short, but everyone seems short to me. Her eyes were deep, that bold blue took you someplace far beyond earth, someplace even I couldn’t describe. She had short dark brown hair, which accented her pale face, sharp pointed nose and narrow jaw line. Everyone thought she was that Goth girl who sat in the corner, but I just saw her as Kahlool. “So we still on for Friday?” “Yep, can’t wait, that new ride will be fantablous!” I hollered. Fantabulous was Kahlool’s and I’s word. It usually came up in every sentence. “Indeed, it will,” She replied. Indeed was our other word. Jay walked pass, butting into our conversation. “Dude, Lydia and I are going too! It will be sweet!” Jay is my little sister, a year younger, but she’s a pretty cool friend. Everyone calls her Jay, well at first it was Jessica, then Jess, then J, so now we made it Jay. Jay is different; she’s tall, taller than me and has long, vibrant red hair. Her eyes are a blue, almost grey, holding some kind of secret, some story. I love reading people’s eyes; Kahlool’s and Jay’s tell the longest story. But Jay has her own friends, well really just Lydia, but I always call her Lyd. Lyd’s like my other sister or maybe a close cousin. Something about Lyd brings this side out of Jay. She acts different around her, or maybe it the family who she acts different around. At home she is a goody-goody, who I can’t compare too. But when she is with Lyd the rebel hidden deep inside her comes out. I think I’m the only one who knows about Jay’s double life. If anyone else did, they would have to see it to believe it. It’s our un-shared secret. “Yes it will,” answered Kahlool. The bell sounded, crap, I’m late, as is Kahlool and Jay. What a bummer. Kahlool and I have the next class together and I have no idea where Jay is headed to, but she didn’t seem too worried. Kahlool and I scurried, plowing past lost seventh graders. I’m sure we look like great role models running around after the bell. And of course, we aren’t late to Ms. Froth’s class, where she is often late herself, no; we are late to Mr. Severi’s class. Great. Mr. Severi has been cold and heartless ever since the class fish died. He’s not crazy; it’s just that the fish was a present from his daughter, who passed away about two years back. The fish had been living forever, well not anymore. “Katherine Sools! McKenzie Aspen! You’re late!” He bellowed. Oh. My. God. I thought the real names. Kahlool is often called Katherine, so that didn’t surprise me, but McKenzie did. No one ever calls me McKenzie; it’s always been Kenz, always. Fear grew, I don’t know, but I might have wet myself, but I’m still too freaked to even care. I looked over to Kahlool, she was a ghostly white, since she was already pale to begin with, I wondered if a ghost inhabited her soul, or if she was a geisha. I stared into Mr.Severi’s eyes, trying to read his being, but there was nothing to read. He had no reason to live, and he obviously knew that. It was eating him alive. I began to stare through him, why strain my eyes for nothing? But there was more, more misery perhaps? I couldn’t figure it out. He stopped screaming, and looked to me, just stood there and stared. “Go sit down.” He said softly. “No detentions? No tardy slips? No nothing?” questioned Kahlool. He ignored her request for punishment, “Kenz, see me after class.” ‘Kenz’ I thought, actually I didn’t think. I was more confused than anything. Why did he stop? Questions buzzed through my head. I started to feel sick. (More sick than that time Kahlool put rum in my frosting last year for my birthday, who knew I was a light drinker?) My brain continued to stir. What did his eyes tell me? The bell rang again, dismissing the class. I sat there and watched. Kahlool was one of the last ones out, she gave me that ‘good luck and don’t die’ look.  more

Resolved Question: Please read the first chapter of this (it's long)?

Im sort of writing a book, and here i the fisr chapter. (i have about 4 done) Now, im only 14, and the book would be for young adolencent. please let me know what you think! Resolved Question: Why does society impose stupid rules?

I know that some rules are necessary. But why is it wrong to get into fights with jerks at church? Why is it wrong to hit girls? I mean Chris Brown is a hero. Why is it wrong to hit kids a couple year younger? Why do I have to wear shirts on hot days? Why is it frowned upon for men to become models and become just as vain as women. Why did I get in trouble for j-walking its my own life. Why is everyone so judgemental. I'm a very simple person who spends half his time working out. But people look down at that because I'm no WORKING to make money and make society a more greedy place to live. I think its okay to look down on other religions because thats what you believe in and you should judge others by their beliefs. What else determines a person besides their belief. I hate almost everyone. I hate society telling me what to do. Why does my family keep on forcing me to study I'm a senior and I want to have fun it's my own life. I mean I don't mind learning but I don't care about making money and inventing stupid stuff to make society a more polluted, cancer, diabetic, obese world. I don't see everyones fascination with technology it makes the world more isolated and nobody goes outside. I am forced to go to a small school because of stupid competition for corporate greed. I just want to move away form everyone and people say stop running away from your problems. They say I am an animal because I work out too much. I love playing my guitar too but stupid school gets in my way and I am not academically fine although I have a high IQ and am hard working. Why does everyone think their superior to each other with their stupid money when they are either fat, skinny and have no talent whatsoever. The world is going down the drain. I bet people in the future will be idiots buying stuff from advertistments on tv led by large corporations. They will have horrible eyesight due to electronics, small arms cuz they never do physical labor because of technolology, obese because of processed food to save time to make money.  more

Resolved Question: What can I do about this tow company who towed my car illegally?

In the early morning of Feb 15th. (3am to be exact) My car was towed. They claimed the reason for removal was due to a fire lane. I had been in contact with the McDonald's parking lot in which I was parked and they had no problem with the exact location I was parked because it was not the tow lane. Upon finding that my car had been towed I attempted to contact the company of J&F garage. I walked 2 miles to the location of my car only to find out that they would not accept my credit card and therefore would not be allowed to remove my car because I could not get the money out of the bank on a Sunday. The man I was in contact with told me to call back Monday and they would be able to assist me. When I called back on Monday I was rudely answered by the same man who I had spoken to on Sunday. He had told me to call back on Monday because I would have to speak to someone else, this was a lie. He was the very same person I needed to speak with but refrained from telling me so. Upon the conversation he repeatedly harassed and accused me of being a low life, drain on society, an unfit mother, and even a crack head. He felt he could justify these remarks because he knew my address and living situation and jumped upon the preconceived notions that come along with living in section 8 housing. He continually used profanity against me and told me that until I had "cash in hand" my property was now his. This angered me and I continually asked his name and to speak to his supervisor. He gave me nothing but a mouth full of lies spitting out multiple names all of which were not his such as: Jim Jones, Jonathon James, and James Johnson. He told me that I did not need to know his superior because it was none of my business. After ending this conversation I called again only to speak to a receptionist who was unaware of her boss or where I could reach anyone to help or complain. I still to this day am not aware of anyone in charge, the actual name of anyone who works there, or the number where I can voice my complaint. Legally is there anything that I can do to get this company in trouble or my money back?  more

Resolved Question: Gutter on building is clogged.?

What is the best way to unclog a drain pipe that feeds directly into the sidewalk. I assume it feeds into the sewer system. The drain pipe is copper and feeds to a cast iron pipe which goes into the sidewalk. The building itself is a 5 story apartment building.Where the copper pipe connects to the cast iron, I can see there is a lot of debris. Should I cut out a piece of the copper and unclog it there? What if it is clogged much further into the ground? How do I repair the drain pipe after I cut it? Thanks in advance. J  more

Voting Question: is this the UK weather forecast for the rest of the year?

The summer will be quite pleasant to start with, but as it gets hotter parent will be told to cover there children in the Michael Jackson fashion to stop them getting sun-burnt , office staff will have to use a gallon of factor 50 as the eat there packed lunches in the park, motorists will abandon their cars as they are sticking to melting tarmac, and no one will have any water because the reservoirs have evaporated. A little relief will follow when the autumn begins, but soon trains will come to a standstill as leaves on the lines will prevent them from leaving the station , drains will be blocked with leaves and there will be wide spread flooding as the rains come, the once empty reservoirs will be overflowing, and you will be able to cast a fishing rod from your bedroom window , probably caching a crab that been washed up from the Bristol Channel. Then in no time at all winter will be back, we will get 2 millimetres of snow, schools will close so that teachers can go sledging, there will be havoc on the roads as no one thought that we would get snow in the winter , so no salt was ordered, factories shops and office buildings will close as the Health and Saftey say that the pavements are to slippy. Is this global warming, is it heck its just an average year in the UK. I will miss all of this as l intend to lock myself in a darkend room with a case of Jack Danniels, that reminds me must get an energy saving light bulb for the shed, anyone want to join me....J  more

Resolved Question: Drain pipe frozen or plugged, how to fix?

My kitchen sink is backed up. I can't figure out why. When dumping water down the drain, it does not make it past the portion of the pipe that makes the " J " shape, then it comes back up. I have tried Lots of Drano, Liquid Plum-er GEL. as well as Salt and boiling hot water, that doesn't work either. So I used a shop vac to suck all the water out of the drain and removed the J Shaped pipe. There is no blockage between the drain and the " J " shaped pipe. So I stuck a snake down in the pipe that the J shaped pipe connects to, I go it about 4 feet of snake and then it stopped. I can't tell if it stopped because it hit a right angle but that is my theory. Anyways, I have verified that the water only flows to the J Shaped pipe and does not flow beyond. But if there is a blockage it must be mauch farther into the piping. Any help or ideas what is wrong?  more

Voting Question: Are The Markets Weak Because the Candidates Are Lousy?

- Have you thought of what a gradual doubling (and indexation) of the minimum wage, sailing through a veto-proof and filibuster-proof Congress, would do to inflation, unemployment and corporate profits? The market now has. - Have you thought of how easily a Labor Department headed by a militant union boss would push through a "Transparency in Labor Relations" law that does away with secret ballots in strike votes, and what this would do to industrial peace? The market now has. - Have you thought of how a Treasury Secretary George Soros would engineer the double taxation of the multinationals' world-wide profits, and what this would mean for investors (to say nothing of full-scale industrial flight from the U.S.)? The market now has. - Have you thought of how an Attorney General Charles J. Ogletree would champion a trillion-dollar reparations-for-slavery project (whittled down, to be fair, to a mere $800-billion, over-10-years compromise), and what this would do to the economy? The market now has. - Have you thought of what the virtual outlawing of arbitration -- exposing all industries to the fate of asbestos producers -- would do to corporate liability and legal bills? The market now has. - Have you thought of how a Health and Human Services Secretary Hillary Clinton would fix drug prices (generously allowing 10% over the cost of raw materials), and what this would do to the financial health of the pharmaceutical industry (not to mention the nondiscovery of lifesaving drugs)? The market now has. - Have you thought of a Secretary of the newly established Department of Equal Opportunity for Women mandating "comparable worth" pay practices for every company doing any business with government at any level -- where any residual gap between the average pay of men and women is an eo ipso violation? Have you thought about what this would do to administrative and legal costs, hiring practices, productivity and wage bills? The market now has. - Have you thought of what confiscatory "windfall profits" taxes on oil companies would do to exploration, supply and prices? The market now has. - Have you thought of how the nationalization of health insurance, the mandated coverage of ever more -- and more exotic -- risks, the forced reimbursement for excluded events, and the diminished freedom to match premium to risk would affect the insurance industry? The market now has. - Have you thought of Energy Czar Al Gore's five million new green jobs -- high-paying, unionized and subsidized -- to replace, at five times the cost, what we are now producing without those five million workers, and what this will do to our productivity, deficit and competitiveness? The market now has. I could go on, but you get the point. Nothing reveals Mr. Obama's visceral hostility to business more than the constant urging of our best and brightest to desert the productive private sector ("greed") and go into public service like politics or community organizing (i.e., organizing people to press government for more handouts). Who in his ideal world would bake our bread, make our shoes and computers, and pilot our airplanes is not clear. ... The silver lining in all this is that the market has already "discounted" an Obama win, so if that happens you won't wake up on Nov. 5 to find your remaining savings down the drain. If the unexpected happens, you may be in for a pleasant surprise." With Obama as president, the most unpopular Congress in over a century will surely have its way and turn our country into a socialistic mess we will not like. I hope you will join me in rejecting that kind of change  more

Resolved Question: New toilet won't flush?!?

Hello, I had this same problem about 2 months ago with my last toilet. Filled fine, tank drained into bowl fine, worked great and all of a sudden quit working right. After extensive troubleshooting I called a plumber and he told me over the phone that the toilet needed replaced. I replaced the toilet with a Kohler Cimarron. It worked immediately after I installed it. This told me that there was no problem elsewhere and the toilet was all of a sudden bad, even though the old one worked perfectly when I tested it in the tub. Anyways. Now I'm in the same boat again. This new toilet has never been clogged/plugged like the old one had. Seemingly for no reason it won't flush right any more. I snaked it and plunged it many many times and no difference. When you flush it the tank drains into the bowl a little slower than I think it should, fills the bowl...bowl slowly drains down to slightly higher than the normal level and doesn't remove anything from the bowl. Any idea what my problem might be? Every other drain in the house works fine. Vent on roof is free and clear. Only thing I'm not sure of is when draining a lot of water at a time in the kitchen sink, or running the dishwasher or washing machine makes the toilet gargle. Thats it, please help. I don't want to go hunting another new toilet. Thanks, -R.J.  more

Resolved Question: Do you think the Patriots should try and trade for a decent QB?

The Patriots season might quickly go down the drain if they keep playing like this, the Patriots schedule is very easy but Matt Cassel is struggling. Who can blame him, this is the first time he has been a starter since pop warner football when he was probably 10 years old. But back to the question, i heard a week ago on NFL Total Access there might have been a possible trade situation for A.J. Feeley from the Eagles. I havn't heard anything since, but im guessing it isn't going to happen because Bellicheck hasn't announced anything. I really think the Patriots should maybe try and trade for a decent back up QB, they're are a few out there. Sage Rosenfels for example, plays well for the whole game just lacks in the 4th quarter. The Patriots are a much better team then the Texans(in my opinion) so i think the Pats would be able to help him out in areas he lacks. Also, Brady Quinn could be a good idea if they where willing to sacrafice something great for him if they BELIEVE he could get them to the play-offs. I know you guys think the world revolves around Brady, but i still think the Pats have a shot at the play-offs this year. What do you guys think? P.S.- A.J. Feeley i think is a good QB, he did almost beat us last year when we where undefeated.  more

Resolved Question: Funny story about bathing cats ~ pet owners will giggle ?

Some people say cats never have to be bathed. They say cats lick themselves clean. They say cats have a special enzyme of some sort in their saliva that works like new, improved Wisk - dislodging the dirt where it hides and whisking it away. I've spent most of my life believing this folklore. Like most blind believers, I've been able to discount all the facts to the contrary - the kitty odors that lurk in the corners of the garage and dirt smudges that cling to the throw rug by the fireplace. The time comes, however, when a man must face reality; when he must look squarely in the face of massive public sentiment to the contrary and announce: "This cat smells like a port-a-potty on a hot day in Juarez." When that day arrives at your house, as it has in mine, I have some advice you might consider as you place your feline friend under you arm and head for the bathtub: * Know that although the cat has the advantage of quickness and lack of concern for human life, you have the advantage of strength. Capitalize on that advantage by selecting the battlefield. Don't try to bathe him in an open area where he can force you to chase him. Pick a very small bathroom. If your bathroom is more than four feet square, I recommend that you get in the tub with the cat and close the sliding-glass doors as if you were about to take a shower. (A simple shower curtain will not do. A berserk cat can shred a three-ply rubber shower curtain quicker than a politician can shift positions.) * Know that a cat has claws and will not hesitate to remove all the skin from your body. Your advantage here is that you are smart and know how to dress to protect yourself. I recommend canvas overalls tucked into high-top construction boots, a pair of steel-mesh gloves, an army helmet, a hockey face mask and a long-sleeve flak jacket. * Prepare everything in advance. There is no time to go out for a towel when you have a cat digging a hole in your flak jacket. Draw the water. Make sure the bottle of kitty shampoo is inside the glass enclosure. Make sure the towel can be reached, even if you are lying on your back in the water. * Use the element of surprise. Pick up your cat nonchalantly, as if to simply carry him to his supper dish. (Cats will not usually notice your strange attire. They have little or no interest in fashion as a rule. If he does notice your garb, calmly explain that you are taking part in a product- testing experiment for J.C. Penney.) * Once you are inside the bathroom, speed is essential to survival. In a single liquid motion, shut the bathroom door, step into the tub enclosure, slide the glass door shut, dip the cat in the water and squirt him with shampoo. You have begun one of the wildest 45 seconds of your life. Cats have no handles. Add the fact that he now has soapy fur, and the problem is radically compounded. Do not expect to hold on to him for more that two or three seconds at a time. When you have him, however, you must remember to give him another squirt of shampoo and rub like crazy. He'll then spring free and fall back into the water, thereby rinsing himself off. (The national record is - for cats - three latherings, so don't expect too much.) * Next, the cat must be dried. Novice cat bathers always assume this part will be the most difficult, for humans generally are worn out at this point and the cat is just getting really determined. In fact, the drying is simple compared to what you have just been through. That's because by now the cat is semipermanently affixed to your right leg. You simply pop the drain plug with your foot, reach for your towel and wait. (Occasionally, however, the cat will end up clinging to the top of your army helmet. If this happens, the best thing you can do is to shake him loose and to encourage him toward your leg.) After all the water is drained from the tub, it is a simple matter to just reach down and dry the cat. In a few days the cat will relax enough to be removed from your leg. He will usually have nothing to say for about three weeks and will spend a lot of time sitting with his back to you. He might even become psychoceramic and develop the fixed stare of a plaster figurine. You will be tempted to assume he is angry. This isn't usually the case. As a rule he is simply plotting ways to get through your defenses and injure you for life the next time you decide to give him a bath. But, at least now he smells a lot better.  more

But at the cabin, a concerned Rick asks if Taylor can truly be okay with raising Brooke's biological child. "He points out that maybe Taylor can't give Jack what he really needs," explains Lang. "He suggests to Taylor that they watch how Jack relates to Brooke." Rick then tells Taylor that she can prove what a selfless mother she really is by letting someone else raise Jack. Resolved Question: Help I'm an addict and nobody knows!!?

Okay so I'm likely totally ADDICTED to the internet and it's RUINING my life!! To all that are laughing...it's pretty sad but I'm not lying!! I just moved away from home b/c of college like two months ago. I have no friends and all of my old friends and I are like completely split up. I've made a facebook & Myspace account, but now it's to the point that i don't even LIKE to talk to people. I like to get messages, but i don't feel the inclination to respond. I'm ways too busy trying to find all the retarded/funny/sad things on the internet. One of my friends actually wrote me a letter, because she was pissed at me and I like don't even care. I'm really sad, but I can't bring myself to respond, because I'm way too busy doing things on the internet that's not even relevant to my life. I don't hardly talk to my parents anymore, because they like to stay on the phone for a long time. That takes me away from my computer and I have a hard time trying to concentrate on the conversation at hand. I think that it's affecting my daily life in almost every way. My college posts all the assignments online, so I figured that I'd be easy to get them done. BUT I have already missed four assignments and one of them was like a huge project. I knew about it and I kept telling myself...I'll get it done..I'll get done, but I was too busy watching a video on my computer to even care. I don't go to sleep until about 3am/4am in the morning. I wake up sometimes at 1pm(if I don't have school) and just get on the computer and stay on ALLL DAY!!N/J. Right now it's almost midnight and I'm completely awake. I've tried going to sleep but it's to the point that I have to take sleep pills just to go to bed at a normal hour. Also I feel like my heart is racing 24/7. Almost like when you have paranoia or have that heavy fear that makes your heart race so fast that it hurts. I don't know what to do!! I've gone as far as trying to meet people on the internet too. I went on CL and met two guys..got high with one and slept with another. Because we just talked about it for awhile and one night decided to try breaking away fromt the cyber portion of things. I have actually prostituted myself once on CL. I was just intrigued by the posts and being curious i made a fake page. Next thing I knew, I'd slept with a 50+ year old guy but I at least had $400 to ease the pain away. I don't know what to do with myself!! I can't help but to feel brain dead when I get on my computer. There was a day that I actually passed out in my apartment, because I went about 22hrs without eating and just sitting in my computer chair all day. I feel totally drained!! I'm sorry that this is such a long post, but it's just that it's not my time to be "falling asleep" yet. And whenever my fingers hit the keyboard they just go by themselves. Everything that I'm thinking just comes bubbling out. Anyways that's besides the point...I seriously need help and it's not like I can really turn to my parents, because I know them well enought to know what they'd say. And it's not like I can get rid of my computer either, because almost every class that I have requires some computer/internet usage. Since living in my own apartment, by myself, and with my computer I've: 1.Met people online 2.Prostituted myself 3.Used drugs 4.Found someone to buy alcohol for me 5.Lost touch with all my friends/family 6.Lost weight due to loss of sleep/appetite. 7.Become almost completely anti-social. I just need help!! This is in no way, shape,or form a joke. I just feel so helpless!! It's easy to say turn your computer off, but I can't. As soon as I turn it off, I'll find a reason to get back on. I can sit for hours and just check my e-mail every five minutes to see if there's something new. I could tell you about almost most of the vids on youtube. I could tell you how to trace/track people down. I could tell you how to phish/log other people's computers. I could tell you how to find away around the blocks that any website has. But at the end of the day, I have no one to talk to, because I'm alone...with my computer.  more

Resolved Question: Do you think that America will have another 9 - 11 in the next 4 years?

WMD report: US remains 'dangerously vulnerable' By BRETT J. BLACKLEDGE and EILEEN SULLIVAN, Associated Press Writers 2 hours, 49 minutes ago WASHINGTON - The United States remains "dangerously vulnerable" to chemical, biological and nuclear attacks seven years after 9/11, a forthcoming independent study concludes. And a House Democrats' report says the Bush administration has missed one opportunity after another to improve the nation's security. The recent political rupture between Russia and the U.S. only makes matters worse, said Lee Hamilton, the former Indiana Democratic congressman who helped lead the 9/11 Commission and now chairs the independent group's latest study. Efforts to reduce access to nuclear technology and bomb-making materials have slowed, thousands of U.S. chemical plants remain unprotected, and the U.S. government continues to oppose strengthening an international treaty to prevent bioterrorism, according to the report produced by the bipartisan Partnership for a Secure America. The group includes leaders of the disbanded 9/11 Commission, the bipartisan panel that investigated government missteps before the 2001 terror attacks on the United States. "The threat of a new, major terrorist attack on the United States is still very real," concludes the report to be released Wednesday, the same day a congressional commission will hold a hearing in New York on nuclear and biological terrorism threats. "A nuclear, chemical or biological weapon in the hands of terrorists remains the single greatest threat to our nation. While progress has been made in securing these weapons and materials, we are still dangerously vulnerable," the report said. Congressional Democrats, meanwhile, had harsher criticism of the Bush administration's efforts. Their report, written by the staffs of the House Homeland Security and Foreign Affairs committees, found little or no progress across the board on national security initiatives. "The Bush administration has not delivered on a myriad of critical homeland and national security mandates," the Democrats' report states. That report was being released Tuesday. "The administration has just failed to act in so many ways," said Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss. "Let's say that we've been fortunate that we have not been attacked" since 2001, said Thompson, who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee. The independent report focuses narrowly on weapons of mass destruction. The report and supporting studies describe the failure of international cooperation to prevent terrorists from obtaining weapons of mass destruction, which they call a major problem. Many countries continue to ignore a United Nations mandate to prevent the spread of weapons; the ability of many countries to monitor potential bioterrorism is "essentially nonexistent," and dangerous chemical weapons stockpiles remain in some countries, including Russia and Libya, the report said. Russia has been a significant player in U.S. efforts to secure nuclear weapons and to eliminate inventories of chemical weapons in the former Soviet region. That cooperation could be jeopardized as the two countries face off over the Russian invasion of Georgia and concerns about a U.S. missile defense base in Poland, Hamilton said. Bush on Monday Bush on canceled a civilian nuclear cooperation deal with Russia. "The things we do to penalize Russia will make it more difficult for us to deal with Russia on other matters," Hamilton said. State Department spokesman Robert Wood said he hasn't seen the report. But he said there have been a number of successes in recent years, including negotiations to dismantle North Korea's nuclear program and Libya's agreement to end its nuclear and chemical weapons program. "We have been engaged multilaterally with a number of countries to deal with this issue of weapons of mass destruction," Wood said. Wood said he also has not seen the Democrats' report. "I fundamentally reject the charge that the administration has made the world less safe from terrorism," he said. House Democrats also blasted Bush policy in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia as damaging to national security. U.S. efforts to combat terrorists in Pakistan have suffered because of "unyielding support for a military dictator"; Iraq has drained resources from the fight in Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia continues to serve "as a major source of terrorist activity," the Democrats' report states. The independent study, however, did credit the Bush administration with progress in a number of areas. It cited improved U.S. port security, reduction of military chemical stockpiles, increased U.S. funding for securing nuclear weapons sites in Russia and new international programs aimed at preventing crimes involving biological weapons. ___ On the Net: Partnership for a Secure America: http://www.psaonline.org/ House Committee on Homeland Security: http://homeland  more

Resolved Question: What's wrong with my toilet?

OK. For some reason when I try to flush the toilet it just fills up the bowl (doesn't overflow) then drains down slowly and nothing in the bowl goes away. There was a piece of plastic stuck in the toilet just before the main drain in the floor. I removed the bowl, cleaned the blockage out and reinstalled the bowl with a new wax ring. While I had the bowl off the floor I filled it with the shower and flushed it in the tub and it worked perfectly. Any ideas? Thanks, -R.J. I'm sure there is no clog further down the line. I ran the hose down the drain in the floor for about 5 minutes and it never backed up. There is no blockage in the toilet itself. I plunged it and augered it. All clean. Any other ideas? Sorry, I'm a first timer... How do I answer my own question so I don't have to continue adding details like this to answer back? No obstruction in the tank, it fills fine and drains into the bowl fine. Dunno about a vent. Every other drain in the house works fine. Now that I think about it. When I reinstalled the toilet the first time I flushed it a few times and it worked fine. The same night we ran the washing machine about 3 times and ran the dish washer twice and the sink was on for about 30 min. washing dishes and stuff. Dunno if this has anything to do with it but after that is when it quit flushing correctly. And you can hear water gargling in the other drains and see bubbles in the toilet when the washing machine or sink or dish washer is running. Never when the shower is on though. Hope this helps. I'll look at the vent line when it quits raining.  more

Resolved Question: Where is basement water coming from?

On Satuday, my wife and I were in our finished basement and heard a drip from Laundry Room. A drip of water was coming down from one spot on the central air duct, rolling down one side of it from the top. Another duct lays on top of it and a floor beam is right there, so there is no way to see above or around it to find the source. Roland J Down guy was at the house 4 hours yesterday. At first we were running the air and there was no drip. He ran tests and says central air working fine. He was just about to give up when water started leaking out in the cellar ceiling like before, a big gush at first and then slowing down to a drip and eventually practically stopping, like the water had built up somewhere and waited until that moment to release itself. It seems like it has to be related to the air somehow, because it only happens when its on, but he says there’s no signs of anything leaking and the condensation drain pipe is working right and not leaking. The only thing that can be done is to remove a piece of the air duct where the water is coming out and see what’s behind it and where the water is coming from. We checked the refrigerator and the hose for the ice maker and it was dry and had no cracks. He opened up the duct work near the leak and it was dry inside. It was dry to the left and right of the drip, so it’s coming straight down from somewhere. We also cut a hole in the sheet rock in the corner near the leak to see what was going on behind there. This shaft is sealed off by sheet rock and hasn't been viewed before, neither by me or the House Inspection team 10 months ago before we moved in. The condensation drain pipe from the furnace ends back there. There’s a hole in the cellar floor that goes down to the Earth a couple feet and the water is supposed to go there, but it looks like it got backed up recently and the water rose up and got inside the wall wet. There were some big heavy duty plastic bags thrown back there at some point and covering most of the hole where the water is supposed to go. The Roland Down guy said we should get them out of there, so I’m going to see if I have a stick long enough and fish them out. I only have a small hole in the sheet rock to work with. Another thing he saw back there is a deep crack in the foundation. House inspection team wouldn’t have seen that when we were buying the place. He says it will be a problem someday. Hopefully we’ll have moved on by then but I'm nervous about it. It didn't look wet or anything. We live in a townhouse for my neighbor shares the same part of the foundation. I’m going to try to fish the plastic out myself tonight and then seal the wall back up. I guess if it rained this much and all we got was just that little dampness seeping through the corner things aren’t that bad. But the walls inside the little shaft looked like water had gotten a couple feet up the wall. It seems like there would have been a bigger mess if it had gotten that high. I’m going to need to get a dehumidifier or something to get the dampness out of there. There’s mold growing in the corner that I need to clean up. The guy is going to report back to the company and they will give an estimate about how much it will cost for them to come in and mess with the duct work. We have 30 days to decide or else we’ll have to pay for another “consultation”. It was still only $99 for the consultation. He gave us our money’s work, I guess. I don’t know how much we can afford. It seems like it all has to be related somehow. The heavy rains and turning the air on. I’m not sure. I can’t think of anything that could explain it. Does anyone have any other ideas about the water's source? Like I said, after having the air on for 30-40 minutes, a gush of water trinkled down the side of the duct and then quickly slowed, first to a rapid drip, then a slower drip, then next to nothing. Thanks in advance and sorry about the long winded tale. ------------------------------------------------- Thanks for the responses. We checked every pipe and found no signs of wetness anywhere. We went from the attic to the basement and found nothing. Attic was completely dry. No traces of water anywhere. The spot where the water appears is beneath the garage. No signs of water penetrating the garage or the areas around the garage. There is no signs of wetness anywhere aside from that one spot, and it has been raining pretty much every day for the past month. If the foundation had another crack in it, one I can't see behind the wall where the duct drip was located, it seems like I'd be seeing it on the floor rather than falling from the ceiling. It's higher than the foundation, lower than the floor upstairs. Even the guy we called in, who seemed very knowledgeable and very thorough, was baffled by the water. There is a sheet rock wall in the cellar that is blocking the view of what lies beyond the airducts (about 1 foot of space).  more

Resolved Question: What was the scene in director Renny Harlan's MINDHUNTERS you thought was most frightening?

-The scene where Christian Slater gets showered by liquid nitrogen and falls into pieces while the rest of the team looks on in horror? -The scene where Will Kemp's head falls off (blood-drained from the body) while put to sleep after drinking coffee (w/ anesthetic)? -The scene where L.L. Cool J. is accused of being the murderer and then Kathryn Morris? -The scene where wheel-chair-bound Clifton Collins, Jr. is hanging on the ceiling for his life while rushing-electricity water is flooding the hallway and that L.L. Cool J. is on the jungle jim and the walls trying to shut off the water and save Clifton's life? -The scene where Eion Bailey gets shot in the chest and the neck by harpoons while he shuts off the water? -The scene where Patricia Velasquez bleeds and burns to death on a pier after smoking an acid-laced cigarette while the team looks on in horror? -The scene where Kathryn Morris, L.L. Cool J., and Johnny Lee Miller hear a strange voice over the loudspeaker (presumably the killer's voice) and follow the voice within areas of the remote island, and into a basement, where the wizard of oz behind the curtain turns out to be Val Kilmer's dead gruesome body hangs by sharp hooks, dead security guards stabbed to death with throats slit, and a video shown with him injured and tortured (he is not the killer). Val on the screen confronts somebody on the video saying "Finish it you child!", and a person's dark clothed back blocks the screen, a knife swishing noise, and the sound of Val screaming as the screen shuts off, and then Val's body moving around under control like a puppet with music and his skin ripping from the hooks. That scene? -The scene where Clifton Collins, Jr. fires his gun in the elevator when a figure approaches which explodes and backfires killing him instantly leaving large pools of blood? -The scene where L.L. Cool J. attacks Kathryn Morris and Johnny Lee Miller and L.L. fight? -The scene where Johnny Lee Miller (the killer) attacks Kathryn Morris who fight in the swimming pool? Tell me which scene you think is frightening after seeing the film MINDHUNTERS!  more

Resolved Question: I Don't Have The Money To Spare, How Can I Heal My Indigo Rage for Free?

I am receiving and producing negative effects when the rage takes me, and have not found a reliable method of Easing this side effect. I am feeling pretty desprate for a solution as this energy is Extremely Draining and is experienced as a feeling of, "I am responsible for the Good of the World, Tho boud by Chains Forced to Watch it Burn." Resolved Question: Have you ever felt pressured to spend money on clothing?

I have lots of wealthy friends who drive BMW's, Priuses, and get mani-pedi's whenever it fancies them. They don't work a whole lot, but they are wonderful, charismatic, intelligent and genuine people who I truly enjoy the company of. I work two jobs, and my money usually goes down the drain when I'm with them, because they buy such beautiful clothes. I have Juicy, J Crew, and Banana Republic and cashmere and silk, but it's usually from consignment shops. I spend money when I'm with them without thinking.....does anybody else do this? I feel so idiotic after spending my money!  more
