Open Question: 1976 Chevy Nova compatible differentials?

I have a 4 door 1976 chevy nova base model. My differential (i believe at least ha) has recently broken and rather than buying a new one for a lot of money, im going to look for one in a junkyard or online. What differentials are compatible with my car? What makes/models and between what years? It has a small block 305 V8. It has a limited slip differential. Im not sure what gears are in there now but i could find out if necessary. Also, is there anything else i should be replacing in addition to the differential? as far as im aware of, its just the differential thats broken and making this awful loud banging on every rotation of the wheels, and the whole car especially the rear end jerks quite a bit. It happened after making a left hand turn sort of hard, and my right wheel is the power wheel. I have done a couple brake torques to spin the tire recently, and trust me i plan to stop after this is fixed. How would i check for a broken axle i dont understand? And i suppose it could be possible that it has something to do with the fluid, because there is some kind of oil on the underside of the differential now. Maybe a broken seal? But i dont believe it would be p[ossible to drive it with a fluid change, because just driving it a few blocks to move it was horrible. The car was incredibly loud and jerked around a bit. also one time the cars brakes locked when i didnt even hit them, and the tires slid for a few feet, mind you this is only going at about 10-15 mph. im thinking it has something to do with the gears in the differential, like some teeth being broken or something and not catching on the rotation  more

Open Question: How do i know if my torque converter/differential is going bad?

I have a 99 Eclipse Spyder GS-T 5 speed, i just had the clutch replaced so i know its not a clutch issue. Also, it did this before the clutch was replaced. I can tell the sound is not coming from the engine or turbo, and im 99% sure its not coming from the tranny, but it sounds like a strange low grumble noise kinda like the torque isnt converting right, like its struggling. Altho its not slipping in any way. Its only in 3rd gear and above that it does this. Is there a fluid i might need to check up on or am i in for a big mess? Oh and its not any kind of obnoxiously loud noise, anyone who doesnt drive the car everyday wouldnt even notice it.  more

Resolved Question: Would it be better to have two electric motors instead of a differential?

In an EV or an EV conversion, would it be better to use two electric motors instead of one motor and a differential? I'm thinking that two motors wired sequentially should give you the same torque on each side although the speeds could vary between the two to account for cornering and that wiring them in parallel will vary the torque to keep the speeds the same which is not what you would want. An emergency bypass switch could be put in in case one motor dies so that you can still drive it on just one motor. Hub motors are produced for electric and hybrid buses and the suspension mounting is rather large for a car. EV's typically use electric motors originally intended for other purposes such as forklifts. Hub motors represent a fair amount of unsprung weight which makes handling difficult. But yes four wheel drive would be a significant improvement but probably not an economical one. Why wouldn't you want equal torque on the wheels, the wheels would turn at different rates which is what a differential is all about. Torque equates with force so equal torque on both sides means that acceleration won't contribute to oversteer during a turn. Seems better than a differential where all the torque goes to the wheel turning the fastest hence to the outside contributing to oversteer and slipping when there's a loss of traction. Hmmm, I was hoping that by wiring them in series, the motors should have identical current hence identical torque thereby avoiding separate controls for torque equalization. If I needed separate controls, I think I would use two CVT's and control the gear ratios instead allowing both motors to run at optimum speeds thereby avoiding complex circuitry to allow regenerative braking through a chopper control circuit but that's more weight and power loss. I would agree that in terms of a conversion, keeping the differential would make things easier however if it's a scratch built frame like with the Urba Electric then perhaps two motors would be an alternative to adapting a differential, only thing is you would need a chopper controller instead of something simple like a CVT as in the Urba-Electric. Somehow I suspect that regenerative braking would be less efficient with a controller, at least more expensive.  more

I have a 98 Jeep Wrangler TJ, with Dana 35. i have a 3.07gr in it now with a standard Differential with 31" BFG Mud Terrains, and was looking to go 33" to the max of 35" after i get the axles i need for strength to hold the 35", I have just purchased a 4.56 LSD Assembly (ring pinion carrier and over haul kit), i have done Differential change outs about 4 times in my life on 3 jeeps and i have all the tools needed including the pinion depth gauges, calipers, inch pound gauge torque stick Etc. My main question(s) are... : What weight oil should i use along with the LSD additive to get the best performance and where's the best place's besides online to get the LSD additive? I own a 1990 BMW 325i, with a worked-over M20 2.5L inline 6 putting out around 210hp/215 torque. i think the differential on it now is probably the 4.10 diff. I definitely want a tighter ratio for racing kind of stuff, maybe 3.91 or something, and i definitely want an LSD or locked one. With the 2008-2009 Subaru Impreza 2.5i (the RS renamed), the decision of transmission affects the system of AWD control. I realize the advantages of the transmissions from a view of only the transmissions, but I want to know the advantages/disadvantages of the AWD control system. Taken from the Subaru website: Continuous AWD: Models equipped with 5-speed manual transmission utilize a viscous-type locking center differential with torque distribution normally configured at a 50/50-split front-to-rear. If wheel speed differs between front and rear axles, the system helps distribute power to the wheels with the most traction. Active AWD: Models equipped with 4-speed automatic transmission utilize an electronically controlled variable transfer clutch to distribute power to where traction is needed. Sensors monitor parameters such as wheel slippage, throttle position and braking, to help determine power distribution and direct it to the wheels with optimum traction. Note that while it doesn't say so here, for the automatic transmission I believe I've read the torque distribution to be 90/10 FWD/RWD. So which AWD control system is superior, and why? EDIT: I realize that all Subaru cars come standard with AWD and that I don't get an option. The fact that there are 2 separate control systems for the AWD based on whether you get an Auto or Manual tranny intuitively leads one to believe that there will be advantages and disadvantages between the two systems. Since they control the AWD in different ways, it would be unwise to assume that they perform the same. If they wanted the same performance, they could have placed the same control system on both transmission options.  more

This gives a combined ratio of 12. It has 15-inch wheels with 195/60 tyres. This gives a wheel radius of 307.5 mm, or a circumference of 1932 mm. With these specs, you can work out the speed that the car will be travelling at, but can you work out the force that is excerted on the ground by its wheels?  more

Resolved Question: How much DC Electric HP would it take to move a 2000 lb Car on Direct Drive?

I have been looking at various electric cars, and just for fun, theoretically speaking, if you had a direct drive motor attached to the rear wheel (without any transmission, or using the existing differential of the car), what size of motor would it require to get it going say to 10-20 mph? Kind of like a large golf cart with a good efficient kW rating (not too small, nor overkill for the most efficient use of energy). I have seen two 8" DC motors at about a total of 30 kW used as the existing gas motor with a lot of capacitors and a huge homemade speed controller, mated to the pressure plate of a manual transmission. Of course by doing this, they get the benefit of the gears and clutch to push the car along fast to it's high end before the bleed power, as you get better torque at slower speeds, and less at higher speeds. I am just curious, hoping to find a engineer or electrician who has entertained these ideas for fun.  more

I need help keeping my back tires down on my '03 Chevy S10. It has the 4.3l Vortec V6 and custom dual exhaust so it has alittle more torque. I had a 300lb tractor tire and hub and a couple of 50lb sand bag in the back of the bed up against the tail gate, but that didnt really help and I dont have the money for a new differential right now, so could someone tell me an easy way to keep my tires from spinning. P.S. Don't tell me to get a spoiler ok, my problem isn't keepin my tires from spinning once it get going down the road, it's when I take off from a stop. I have a1999 Ford Ranger that I want to change the differential gear oil with the Royal Purple but I can not find the torque specs for reinstalling the cover plate. The Hayes book says not to overtighten or the cover can be warped but it does not give a torque spec. I am guessing it would be 30 lbs but am not sure. Anyone familiar with Fords? I understand that a differential allows for each wheel to rotate at a different speed. In a front wheel drive car, is it true that if you have an open differential, no LSD or traction control, that during a burn out or acceleration that more torque is transferred to the front right wheel? Are these sufficient enough for driving in snow? It looks like it will be snowing while I'm up there. My Outback has a "viscous-type locking center differential and limited-slip rear differential with torque distribution normally configured at a 50/50-split front-to-rear." To me, it sounds fit to drive in snow straight out of the chute. Any other opinions?  more

Resolved Question: Why does my car pull to the right when accellerating and to the left when decellerating?

My 97 honda 4 cylinder automatic accord does this on the interstate at around 70-80 miles per hour but drives strait when the speed is steady. The car can be steered with the accelerator its that noticeable. I thought it might be alignment but it is within specifications. The car has 170,000 miles but the struts have been replaced and are fine, along with new cv shafts. The tie rods exhibit no play. Possible causes from what i have researched is worn suspension bushings, dragging brakes, bad differential, bad tie rods, or torque steer. Car seems exhibit this characteristic worse in freezing temperatures for some reason and is noticeable at take off. I took it by a shop when i had the egr valve replaced and mentioned it but the mechanic refused to look at it since my car has been lowered even though i have used camber kits and it was years ago i lowered it. Can anyone help me narrow it down or give me other possible culprits?  more

Does this mean the Democrats favor tax hikes over real spending control? It appears so. Washington economist Kevin Hassett says this is part of the Democrats’ “war against winners,” and he’s right on the money. In particular, these willy-nilly changes of the tax rules would have a chilling effect on capital formation, and could constitute the biggest attack on capital since the 1930s. All of these firms were brought back from the dead thanks to private partnerships. Nobody knows for sure whether Congress will green-light the Democrats’ anti-growth agenda. The hope is that President Bush will veto any tax hike that lands on his desk. But the mere threat that Congress would embark on such a program of wealth destruction and economic impoverishment — all in the name of taxing “rich people” — has investors reeling. Ironically, a lot of today’s anti-cap-gains momentum is the handiwork of former Clinton Treasury secretary Robert Rubin. He actually believes a low cap-gains tax has no economic growth impact at all. However, back when Clinton and Rubin were running things, the personal income-tax rate was lifted from 31 to 40 percent, while the cap-gains tax was reduced from 28 to 20 percent, making for a 20 percentage point tax advantage for cap-gains over regular income. Flashing forward, the current Bush administration lowered the income-tax rate to 35 percent and the cap-gains rate to 15 percent, preserving that 20 percent differential. Hmm . . . Is Rubin saying the cap-gains tax advantage was good for the Clinton boom, but not the Bush boom? Truth is, that differential provides a strong incentive for entrepreneurial risk taking and higher-risk, cutting-edge investment — both of which lend real torque to the economy. Another unfortunate irony is that while Democrats think they’re striking out at the rich, they’re actually jeopardizing the retirement portfolios of millions of middle-income Americans. My 2005 Toyota Rav4 (4WD) is due for a 15,000-mi service. But, the dealership charges $199 for it! I understand the oil change, tire rotation, and checking the air filter/brake pads are important. How important is it to re-torque the drive shaft bolt? What does that even mean?
