Open Question: Need help with differentials & gears (kinematics) ?
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2509/3675924971_bc6e376e81_o.jpg For differential carrier on picture determine the angle velocity of gear 5 (W5=?). You have: angle velocity of arm k ...Wk= 6s*-1 angle velocity of gear 4...W4=4s*-1 number of teeth's of gears z1=20, z2=8, z3=8, z4=16. moreOpen Question: 1976 Chevy Nova compatible differentials?
I have a 4 door 1976 chevy nova base model. My differential (i believe at least ha) has recently broken and rather than buying a new one for a lot of money, im going to look for one in a junkyard or online. What differentials are compatible with my car? What makes/models and between what years? It has a small block 305 V8. It has a limited slip differential. Im not sure what gears are in there now but i could find out if necessary. Also, is there anything else i should be replacing in addition to the differential? as far as im aware of, its just the differential thats broken and making this awful loud banging on every rotation of the wheels, and the whole car especially the rear end jerks quite a bit. It happened after making a left hand turn sort of hard, and my right wheel is the power wheel. I have done a couple brake torques to spin the tire recently, and trust me i plan to stop after this is fixed. How would i check for a broken axle i dont understand? And i suppose it could be possible that it has something to do with the fluid, because there is some kind of oil on the underside of the differential now. Maybe a broken seal? But i dont believe it would be p[ossible to drive it with a fluid change, because just driving it a few blocks to move it was horrible. The car was incredibly loud and jerked around a bit. also one time the cars brakes locked when i didnt even hit them, and the tires slid for a few feet, mind you this is only going at about 10-15 mph. im thinking it has something to do with the gears in the differential, like some teeth being broken or something and not catching on the rotation moreOpen Question: How do i know if my torque converter/differential is going bad?
I have a 99 Eclipse Spyder GS-T 5 speed, i just had the clutch replaced so i know its not a clutch issue. Also, it did this before the clutch was replaced. I can tell the sound is not coming from the engine or turbo, and im 99% sure its not coming from the tranny, but it sounds like a strange low grumble noise kinda like the torque isnt converting right, like its struggling. Altho its not slipping in any way. Its only in 3rd gear and above that it does this. Is there a fluid i might need to check up on or am i in for a big mess? Oh and its not any kind of obnoxiously loud noise, anyone who doesnt drive the car everyday wouldnt even notice it. moreResolved Question: dodge ram gearing in differential?

Now I am getting a big "thunk" on the rear end which feels like the limited slip differential is going out on it. The shop that did that work it OOB now. I'm a little stumped here and I don't really much about cars but I know just the basics. My car is having some issues but before you say take it to a shop I need to know could possibly the problem here. It has about 160,000 miles and has been recently serviced: - Oil Change - Radiator Flush - Transmission Flush - Differential Fluid Changed - Fuel Filter / Fuel System Cleaned The were times that I would press the gas it seemed like it hesitated and times I don't. It's almost if you were pumping the gas effect with the power flickering on the car. My check Engine Light was also flickering and now it starts. I asked a friend of mine and they told me it could be a lot of things but I'm not quite sure what it could be. I don't think its the transmission because the times it doesn't hesitate it shifts gear smoothly. On the side note I haven't changed my air filter yet so I'm going to do that tomorrow and reset my check engine. If it happens again then it has to be something else ... but what? fuel pump? fuel injector? what could it be ? I don't really want to spend so much on the car because I've already put more then what it's worth. Thanks in advance Check Engine light stays on **** (not start) 3.5L Engine moreVoting Question: how much wear is too much on a rearend to be able to tell if u can rebuild it or not?

I recently bought a used truck and may be needing some parts for my rear differential. It has had work done on it before and now the tag on it has been cut off. Hello everyone i was wondering if u guys could help me with an issue with my 03 wrx. I got the car about 2 months ago and i got it for pretty cheap it only had 68k miles and i got it for 5500 i knew these cars had glass transmissions but i was hoping it would last me longer than 2 months atleast a year or so but anyways i was driving one day and i had a light and was slowing down but then it turned green and i had to go so i put on 1st gear and boy did it grind i was only doing a 5 mile per hour roll then at the next light i had to make a right so i slowed down and was going to put it in second and it would not go in tried third and than second again and nothing so i rolled into a parking lot and parked and then i was able to put it in every gear so i took off and it seemed fine but than i noticed that when i put on 3rd gear it would make a rattling noise and it got louder it went into gear fine from second to 3rd and the power was there all the way through 3rd but it makes that rattling noise and if u try 2 go from 4th to 3rd it grinds so i guess now i will be skipping 3rd gear since it seems the car dont like to be in that gear. What should i do in case my trans is done the guys at a subaru performance shop said they could do a 6speed sti swap 4 4500 labor and all of course the trans would be used with low miles i know a new sti trans is like 4grand plus labor or should i rebuild mine 4 3700 labor and all i figure a rebuild one is better than a new one or low millage one since its built stronger than oem plus its lighter than the 6speeds and it would be a direct bolt on wouldnt have to get differentials or any thing. well sorry this question is so long but it tried to be as detailed as possible but anyways i would appreciate any feedback on this issue thanks. i hope the car gets me around altleast until the end of the year or begining of next year when il have the money. moreResolved Question: transmission swap in my 93 saab 9000?

I am trying to take the differential cover off my truck. The cover is so rusty, the gear oil is seeping though the metal. The 10 bolts holding it in place are so rusty, that the heads of them are completely deformed from rust. I tried some liquid wrench and a socket, but it just ended up rounding the heads of the bolts. I also tried the Irwin Bolt-Grip extractor set without any luck. I tried heat and Vise Grips which also didn't work. How hard would it be to drill out the bolts? (I have 8 left, I did get the 2 non-rusty ones off) The heads of the bolts are still attached. Can I drill them out with the heads still on? What are your suggestions? (and no, I don't have a welder) This "easy" project is driving me insane. It should be so simple; take bolts out, put new cover and gasket on, and screw new bolts in. My 78 Vette drives great but when I hit the highway at speeds of 70 MPH + the RPMs reach from 2800 up 3200 which makes me nervous. Especially since it red lines at 5400. I have found I can order an 80/81 model Vette rear end with 2.72 gearing. I am wondering though if that will cause any unwanted effects ie: pinging when climbing hills, or problems with the automatic transmission downshifting. moreResolved Question: Question for knowledgeable lawn tractor mechanics (Sears Craftsman) -?
I "inherited" an older Sears Craftsman lawn tractor recently - it is a basic model, 11 hp, 4 speed, synchro balanced, 4 cycle. When I try cutting grass in say gears 1-4 with deck down & blades engaged, I am getting a loud noise from somewhere down it seems in the drive-train or maybe back (differential) area - It is like a loud "bang, bang" like a hammer hitting metal - Also when this occurs, the tractor seems to lurch or jump in & out of forward gear, like its losing the gear, going into neutral for a split second, then jumping (jerking) into gear again. It does it more and more as I am using it. I don't know anything about these tractors - I see there is a nylon drive belt running underneath from the engine (engine is in front of tractor) back to the top of the differential, where the belt goes around a "drive pulley" in the rear end. When parked, engine off and gears in Neutral, this drive belt is very very loose, lots of slack in it - not sure if this is normal in Neutral with engine off. Any suggestions on what I could do to degug and diagnose this problem (and fix it). Thanks very much !!! moreResolved Question: Are truck tires supposed to spin when the truck is hoisted in the air?
I've been having problems with my truck. It started with a loud clunking sound while I was driving down the rad so I drove home real slow and hoisted my rear tires in the air. I turned the tires with my hand and for a little while both tires would turn. Then after a few seconds it stopped and only one tire would turn at a time. I started it and put it in gear and there was a loud clunking sound coming from the rear differential where the drive shaft connects. That and the tires would not spin. Do you think this could be worn out U joints or could the rear differential be shot? Oh and if it helps it's an 87 Chevy pickup. The drive shaft is still connected and the truck drives but it clunks really loud. For some reason the tires wont spin while it is hoisted. moreResolved Question: What kind of RTV silicone do you use to make or seal a rear?

Have a car, had a brand new transmission and engine. Car had been sitting out for around 6 months, in the weather. Started it up the other day, engine still runs like new, but doesn't want to go into gear. The shifter moves to park, reverse, neutral, etc. But the vehicle doesn't go anywhere. Shocks? Lower control arm? Rear differential?
I've got a '99 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6. I had the rear end replaced about 2 years ago because it was wearing out and grinding loudly (I heard all F-body rear differentials go bad after about 80-90k miles). The take-off rear end I replaced it with is going bad now as well (it was another F-body GM-made rear end, but I think the place I bought it from made a mistake with matching the gear ratio--my speedometer and odometer are both off ever since the replacement). Ever since the mechanic replaced my rear differential, there has been a metallic "clunk" heard from the driver's side rear of the car whenever I'd hit a bump. At first it was only heard with larger bumps in the road. But over the last 2 years, it's been getting steadily worse, and now I can hear a "clunk" even when I roll over something as minor as one of those turn arrows on the asphalt that has been painted over many times. It's terrible when driving down the historic district of my town, where the roads are mainly brick. The rattling noise when driving on a brick road is practically louder than my car's custom exhaust! I thought it might be either the shocks, lower control arm bushings, or a faulty install with the entire rear end. The original mechanic claims it was a good install, but of course he's going to say that. He also didn't see anything else wrong. I'll be taking in to another shop, but I wanted to hear some feedback from you guys about what you think it could be, and what you think I should expect to shell out for any parts and labor. Thanks for any help you can offer! (If you need more details, post them and I'll add the details to my question) moreResolved Question: Where can I find information on gears-trains dimensions?

So, I thought my problem was going to be the clutch release bearing. I've got the gearbox out of my polo and the clutch release bearing seems okay to me. If I drive the clutch spindle with my hand, however, and the car is in a gear, then i can hear a slight grinding noise. I took the car to bits because of a grinding noise that was proportional to the wheel speed, had nothing to do with braking and was reduced when the clutch was depressed.
