Voting Question: How much of the material and concepts of Calc II are covered in multivariable calculus?

We basically learned a lot of different ways to integrate (integration by parts, by partial fractions, trig substitutions etc.) We didn't do much when it comes to parametric equations and polar coordinates (in fact, we skipped over the chapter) and we did a little regarding infinite series. Basically, if anyone has taken calc II and multivariable calc, can you please tell me how much of the material from calc II is brought up again in multivariable? A lot of people have told me I won't see much of it in multivariable but will come back to a lot of it in differential equations. Thank you! Also, would you recommend taking differential equations right after calc II or multivariable?  more

While this is only 13-14 credits, I know it may be a tad more difficult then it sounds. I do not work and am not planning on volunteering or shadowing during this time and am wondering if this is still doable. Any advice? But is this too much? Anon, what the hell does Calc 2 have to do with anything? Apparently you don't know Multivariable Calc = Calc 3 and Diff. Equations is more or less a Calc 4 equivalent. The rest aren't electives; they're all math courses.  more

Resolved Question: What kind of career prospects do macroeconomists have?

Right now, I am a chemical engineering student that has taken three semesters of calculus. I am enrolled in a differential equations course in the fall. I am entering my sophomore year of school at UW-Madison and found my general elective macroeconomics course fascinating. I enjoy applying math to the real world, like optimization problems. I was also researching the Chicago School of Economics and really love their anti Keynesian, free market philosophy. I am kind of torn between these careers. So, could someone with experience in either field please tell me the pros and cons of your career. I would say that I don't think that I would enjoy working in academia. Thank you.  more

Resolved Question: Sweepstake Problem => Calculus AB?

You win a well-known national sweep-stakes! Your award is an income of $100 a day for the rest of your life! You decide to put the money into a fireproof filing cabinet and let it accumulate there. But the temptation sets in, and you start spending the money at S dollars per day. a. Let M be the number of dollars you have in the filing cabinet and let t be the number of days you have been receiving the money. Assuming that the rates are continuous, write a differential equation that expresses dM/dt in terms of S. b. Your spending rate, S, is directly proportional to the amount of money, M. Write an equation that expresses this fact, then substitute the result into the differential equation. c. Separate the variables and integrate the differential equation in part b to get an equation for M in terms of t. As the initial condition, realize that M=0 when t=0. d. Suppose that each day you spend 2% of the money kept in the filing cabinet. That is, proportionally constant in the equation for S is 0.02. Substitute this value into the equation you found in part C to get M explicitly in terms of t. e. Plot the graph of M versus t. Sketch the result. f. After 30 days, 60 days, and 90 days, how much money will you have in the filing cabinet? How much has come in? How much has been spent? g. After a year, how much money is in the filing cabinet? At what rate is the amount increasing at this time? h. What is the limit of M as t approaches infinity?  more

Resolved Question: a project for my Calculus AB class...?

For my Calculus AB class we are assigned to explore real world applications of differential calculus. My partner and I decided to investigate a physics related subject: the Doppler Effect. We formulated a problem involving calculus and the Doppler Effect equation. Here is our problem: An ambulance is on patrol. The driver is at a stoplight when he receives a call from dispatch informing him of a situation calling for his services. At this point the driver turns on his siren which is pitched at 600Hz. As soon as he is able the driver begins accelerating at a rate of 5 m/s/s. If a stationary obverver is standing at the corner 15 feet away from the ambulance when it starts moving, then at what rate will the pitch of the siren decrease as it moves away from the observer? After some work we thought we had found the correct solution but when I sent the problem to our good friend who is attending UW-Madison he started telling me that something needed to be done with Pythagorean Theorom to complete the problem. He was trying to make a triangle with the information about the distance of the observer from the corner. But I don't think this is relevant information, distance from observer to ambulance shouldn't matter, just speed. Or maybe I am wrong. My question is: will we need to use Pythagorean theorem for this or not? Any reasonable input it appreciated. Thanks.  more

Voting Question: Calculus question based on Seperable Differential Equations?

Voting Question: I got an F in math? Will I make it to Grad school?

I am a math and economics major. I want to study financial mathematics in grad school. Im actually REALLY good at math. The problem is that during my first 2 years in college i was careless and didnt study and i failed differential equations. I also had a C+ in Multivariate calculus. However, over last summer I took probability theory and linear algebra (both for the first time) AND i retook differential equations. and i got As in all three. Also in my junior year i took many advanced math courses (numerical analysis, discrete time models in financial math, continous time models, modern algebra etc) and i got As in all of them as well. Apart from the multivariate calc (C+) and differential equations(F....then A)....all my grades are As or A-. Do I stand a chance at being accepted to a GOOD grad school (such as UCLA or NYU) for financial math or am I DOOMED?? is there anything i can do to make it better? Oh yes....I also have A+ in introductory physics 1 and 2. and I have an A in C++.  more

Resolved Question: How will my application look compared to others?

I am a junior in New Jersey. I'm looking at colleges and want to find out how good my application will look. (9th-11th) weighted GPA: 91.49 Junior year (1st semester) weighted GPA: 98.46 (out of 100) and my 2nd semester is just as good if not better than 1st for junior year Classes this year: AP Calc BC, took the AP and definitely got a 5 AP Chemistry, definitely got a 5 AP Language and Composition, not sure how I did AP Physics B, have not taken it yet (make up) Honors Government and Politics As a Freshman, I took Honors Algebra II and Honors Bio. The rest of my classes were standard or intro classes As a Sophomore, I took Honors Precalculus (I skipped Calculus AB), Honors Chemistry, Honors US History, Honors English 10 My grades Freshman and Sophomore year were around 90; during junior year I stepped up in schedule rigor and performance. For Senior year, I plan on taking the following: AP Physics C AP Economics AP English Literature AP Statistics A "capstone" comprised of individual study in the following: –Multivariable calculus –Differential equations –Advanced mechanics (Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics) –Possibly a deeper study of electricity and magnetism That is at least three, possibly four college classes as my capstone, and I also have 4 APs for senior year. Combined, that would be 8 APs and 3 college classes for independent study. I also play golf. I'm #1 on the varsity team. I can shoot under par for nine if I play well, and usually the highest I will go is around four or five over par under normal conditions for a nine hole round. In tournaments this year, I have placed 5th (out of 120) in Monmouth County with an 81 in unfavorable conditions and in our conference tournament, I placed 3rd out of 28 in even worse conditions with an 82. Since I come from a smaller school, my golfing ability is marginalized, but I do not plan to go to college to play golf; I might try out for the Varsity team but I am first and foremost dedicated to academics. I have a few but not many community service activities, and am involved in a few groups in school. Additionally, I tutor math, usually (and preferably) for free but some people insist they pay me.  more

Resolved Question: Is taking advanced calculus/analysis in the third semester a good idea?

After this summer, I'll have completed the full honors calculus sequence, differential equations, and linear algebra/matrix theory at my university. I'd really like to take advanced calculus this fall semester, which will be my third semester here. This will allow me to take abstract algebra the next semester and possibly advanced calculus II or topology, which would prepare me for some summer REU's and study-abroad programs that I really want to participate in. I'm wondering how early one usually takes a class in analysis/advanced calculus. I'm also wondering if it would be unreasonable to take a course like advanced calculus in the same semester as a second course in calculus-based physics (which includes a lab and a recitation--i.e, it takes up an inordinate amount of time compared to other classes). My university is offering for the first time next semester a "transition class" called Introduction to Advanced Mathematics that appears to basically build the foundations of proof-writing, logic, and set theory needed to do advanced calculus. My advisor was directly involved in the design of this class as far as I can tell, so I doubt he would advise me on skipping it. However, I've spent a significant amount of time reading about math in my spare time, both while in college and while in high school, and I don't think it would be unreasonable for me to go straight into advanced calculus, although I suppose I wouldn't know for sure unless I tried. For those of you who took advanced calculus without a transition course, did you find it unreasonably difficult? And for those of you who took analysis with a transition course, did you feel as if the transition course was truly necessary? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!  more

Also, when will I take a class that really emphasizes how to apply complex mathematical models to real life situations?  more
